Welcome to “A Look Back,” where we review and celebrate select clips from the overwhelmingly voluminous video catalog and the many splendid works of Stephen T. Colbert over the years.
Around 2004 or so Stephen was featured in a series of ads promoting the now defunct “Mr. Goodwrench” vehicle service program by General Motors. Stephen was brought on board to revive the program’s popularity, with quirky, funny ads that had our fearless host in an endless search for the real Mr. Goodwrench. The result are some commercials that are actually funny. Who would have thought that possible (oh, wait, it has Stephen in it, nevermind):
You can tell by the jokes that Stephen wrote much of the material himself (“What is this made of, metal?”). Also, the series of commercials gave rise to some truly fantastic bobblehead dolls, which you should avail yourself to if you have the green.
Even though Mr. Goodwrench is no more, with Stephen admitting to having “murdered” him, the commercials shall live on in YouTube posterity.
