How the Stephen Colbert Interview with Eminem Happened at Monroe Public Access
The beginning stages:
It was just a normal day at the office some weeks ago for Monroe Public Access executive director Milward Beaudry at the 5th street studios, until he received a somewhat secretive and exciting phone call.
“The caller ID said CBS in New York. They asked me a bunch of questions about our studio and possible limitations,” Beaudry said. “They were getting a feel for what our facility could do and how things are set up here. After they talked to me and looked at video of our set on our website, they decided to move forward with the secret interview.”
The pre-interview:
After weeks of wondering what was going to happen and how it was all going to come together, the day arrived: June 29, 2015. CBS brought its crew to Monroe Public Access and got to work on the interview.
“It was still a big surprise on the amount of people CBS brought with them. Eleven people in total. When they got here, they immediately went to work.”
All hands were also on deck for the Monroe Public Access staff. The team only has a five people who work there. All were there on the big day of the interview, including some interns from Monroe Community College.
“The goal was to get as many of our members to work on the interview. For instance, one intern did the audio, and our program director did the technical directing.”
The Eminem surprise:
It wasn’t until the day of the interview that the crew learned it wouldn’t just be Stephen Colbert and his crew in the studio. No one at Monroe Public Access knew of the special A-list celebrity guest who would be a part of the program.
“We did not know anything about Eminem. We knew about Colbert, but not Eminem. Only when they gave us papers to sign on the day of did we learn who his guest was.”
