Until we find a new staff member to fill karenatasha’s position, the BKAG posts will be a team effort from all of the Hub Staffers. I am currently working on tweaking the format slightly, so do bear with me while I work on adding a little freshness to the BKAG post.

The current Emeritus Professor of History at Northwestern University, a position he has held since 1980, Garry Wills is a prolific American author, journalist, and historian specialising in American history, politics, religion, and the history of the Roman Catholic Church. With nearly forty books under his belt, Wills has also found time to be a frequent reviewer for ‘the New York Review of Books’.

A graduate of the University of the South, where he majored in ‘Comparative Literature’, Roger Hodge began completed at master’s degree in ‘Philosophy’ at the New School for Research, but joined ‘Harper’s’ before finishing his dissertation. Following an internship in 1996, Hodge joined ‘Harper’s Magazine’ as a fact checker, before taking on the role of editor in 2006. Fired from the position in 2010 by John R. MacArthur, Hodge went on to become only the second editor in the twenty year history of the ‘Oxford America’.

Dave Grohl (Musician and Documentary Filmmaker, ““Sound City”)
The multi-talented Dave Grohl is an American rock musician, multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, film director, and founding member of the ‘Foo Fighters’. Previously, the drummer for 90’s grunge band ‘Nirvana’, Grohl has gone onto co-found the rock supergroup ‘Them Crooked Vultures’, work on short-lived side-projects ‘Late!’ and ‘Probot’, and perform session work as a drummer for a variety of musicians, including ‘Garbage’, ‘Nine Inch Nails’, ‘David Bowie’, ‘Sir Paul McCartney’, ‘The Prodigy’ and ‘Slash’.

Gavin Newsom (Author: “Citizenville: How to Take the Town Square Digital and Reinvent Government”)
Named the ‘Most Social Mayor in America’ in 2010 by a ‘Samepoint’ study, Gavin Newsom is an American politician and current Lieutenant Governor of California. First appointed in 1996 by Willie Brown to San Francisco’s ‘Parking and Traffic Commission’, Newsom drew voter attention with his ‘Care Not Cash’ program, which aimed to move the homeless into city assisted care. Defeating the Green Party’s Matt Gonzalez, Newsom was elected the 42nd Mayor of San Francisco in 2003, making him the youngest mayor in one hundred years. Away from the political spotlight, Newsom founded the ‘PlumpJack Wine Shop’ in 1992, which has since grown into a multi-million dollar enterprise, which now includes bars, restaurants and hotels.
Bringing national attention to gay marriage in 2004, Mr. Newsom’s own marriage would catch the attention of ‘The Colbert Report’ (‘The San Francisco Treat’) when he admitted to having an affair with the Ruby Rippey-Tourk, wife of his former Deputy Chief of Staff and then Campaign Manager, Alex Tourk.

Away from the political sphere, Stephanopoulos is a founding member of the non-profit organisation ‘Next Generation Initiative’, which sets out to promote youth leadership, education and civic involvement.
Fun Fact: Was the basis for the characters Lewis Rothchild in ‘The American President’ (1995) and Henry Burton in ‘Primary Colors’ (1998).

Piazza’s Major League Baseball career began in 1988 when he was selected as an amateur draft by the LA Dodgers. After winning the ‘MLB Rookie’ of the year in 1993, Piazza has gone on to play with the Florida Marlins, New York Mets, San Diego Padres and the Oakland A’s, as well as playing in 12 MLB All-Star Games. Piazza currently holds the record for most home runs hit by a catcher, with 396 (and counting).
Fun Fact: Piazza took karate lessons to prepare for an on field fight with Roger Clemens during their infamous ‘Beanball Feud.

Fawzia Koofi (Author: “Long Shot” and MLB “The Favored Daughter: One Woman’s Fight to Lead Afghanistan into the Future”)
Born and raised in rural Afghanistan, Fawzia Koofi earned a master’s degree in ‘Business Management’ from Pakistan’s Preston University. Since 2002 she has worked as a project officer with UNICEF Afghanistan, working tirelessly as a human rights advocate, focusing on improving the lives of women, children and internally displaced people’s. Elected to Afghanistan’s parliament in 2005 – representing Badakshan province – Koofi served as the nation’s first female deputy speaker of parliament.
True Fact: Was left to die in the sun as a newborn by her mother.

Susan Rice (Author: “Long Shot” and MLB “The Favored Daughter: One Woman’s Fight to Lead Afghanistan into the Future”)
Since 2009, Susan Rice has served as the permanent representative to the United Nations with a special interest in genocide prevention, decreasing weapons spread and furthering human rights. With extensive academic and political experience, Susan Rice has been a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, and the Assistant Secretary of the State for African Affairs under President Clinton. In addition to her role at the UN, Rice currently serves as a member of President Obama’ Cabinet, after having played a key role in the 2008 campaign.
Fun Fact: A three-sport athlete in High School, Rice was nicknamed ‘Spo’ (short for ‘Sporting’) by her basketball team mates.
