Ta-Nehisi Coates (Author: “The Beautiful Struggle: A Father, Two Sons, and an Unlikely Road to Manhood”)

Ta-Nehisi Coates is an American writer, journalist, educator and national correspondent at The Atlantic whose first book, The Beautiful Struggle, recounts his childhood in Baltimore during the 1980s. During this time, the city was not the safest place for a child, but Coates’s memoir reflects on his father’s efforts to protect the family and provide for his children. He remembers his father Paul as a driven man: a former member of the Black Panther Party, a Vietnam veteran, and a man who created his town publishing company in the family’s basement create an exhaustive history of African civilization. Out of the seven children in his family, Paul only had trouble with two: Ta-Nehisi and Big Bill, who both presented different challenges to their father in his quest to keep his children off the street. Time Out New York calls the book “A remarkable, blunt portrait of an adolescence filled with danger, chaos, flaws, and tragedy . . . a love story, dispatched from the front lines of a family,” with Walter Mosley naming “Ta-Nehisi Coates is the young James Joyce of the hip-hop generation.”

In the book they explain the legal framing of the case, highlighting the constitutional principles used to argue their position and strike down discriminatory law with the final decision of Hollingsworth v. Perry in 2013. Publisher’s Weekly praised the book for its “clear explanations about the landmark case and the judicial process in general will leave readers well-prepared to follow the subtleties of the discussion as individual states take on the gay marriage issue.”

Daniel Schulman (Author: “Sons of Wichita: How the Koch Brothers Became America’s Most Powerful and Private Dynasty”)

Daniel Schulman is an American author and journalist, whose new book Sons of Wichita is a biography of Charles and David Koch, the Koch brothers who are two of the prime financiers of politics in Washington. The brothers got their first chance at wealth when they were given an inheritance, which their father warned “seems to be a large sum of money” but “may either be a blessing or a curse.” That small fortune eventually turned into Koch industries, one of the largest corporations on the world. Their frequent adventures into politics has made both very controversial figures: to some, they fight big government, and to others, they are a source of the money that corrupts politics. Sons of Wichita also focuses on the lesser known Koch brothers. Bill Koch, who has built an energy empire, become a playboy, and taken to collecting wine and western art, and Frederick Koch who is much more private, devoting his life to refurbishing historic homes and properties.
