Rob Rhinehart (Creator: Soylent)

Rob Rhinehart is an American engineer and the creator of Soylent. Soylent is a new food product made from maltodextrin, rice protein, oat flour, canola oil, fish oil, and raw chemical powders that can serve as a staple meal for adults, and is designed to provide maximum nutrition with less effort than cooking a day’s worth of meals. Rhinehart was inspired to create the product by the need for a simpler food source and the time and money required to prepare healthy meals and get all the required nutrition. Soylent has been heralded by the press as “the end of food,” but as Rhinehart says in The New Yorker, “we’ll see a separation between our meals for utility and function, and our meals for experience and socialization.”

Philip K. Howard (Author: “The Rule of Nobody: Saving America from Dead Laws and Broken Government”)

Philip K. Howard is an American lawyer, writer, and founder of the legal reform nonprofit Common Good. His book, The Rule of Nobody, details his belief that legal philosophy must be reformed in order to achieve the goals society wants. His concern with the current legal system is that it’s concerned with following the letter of the law rather than passing common-sense justice; sticking to concrete law will not work. The answer to this issue is to simplify the legal system and allow the use of common sense and returning to what he believes was the original intent of American public law – to reach certain goals and keep people within certain agreeable boundaries. Stuart Taylor, Jr. of The Wall Street Journal notes that”Amid the liberal-conservative ideological clash that paralyzes our government, it’s always refreshing to encounter the views of Philip K. Howard, whose ideology is common sense spiked with a sense of urgency … [This] book drives home some large truths.”

Born: 1948 (Kentucky, United States)
