Caitlin Flanagan is an American writer and social critic, whose article “The Dark Power of Fraternities” was featured in The Atlantic. The article explores the darker side of Greek societies in American schools, especially that of fraternities. It stems from a yearlong investigation of Greek houses that sheds light on the subject and demonstrates the way that many fraternities shift the blame for problems on their property.

Jaron Lanier (Author: “Who Owns the Future?)

Jaron Lanier is an American writer, computer scientist, and composer of classical music. His book, Who Owns the Future?, intends to predict the directions that technological developments will take us. Lanier particularly focuses on the effects of network technology on the world economy, and believes that the networks had some hand in the recession, and that industries will face more problems with employment. In contrast to this bleak prediction, he also presents a possible future in which people take back their destiny from technology.

Beau Willimon (Writer and Producer: “House of Cards”)

Beau Willimon is an American playwright and screen writer, whose currently serves as the writer and producer of the hit Netflix original series House of Cards. The series follows Frank Underwood, a Democratic Senator from North Carolina. The show, which released its second season on February 14th, follows Underwood’s political (and often personal) dealings in Washington DC, along with those of his wife, Claire (Robin Wright), Washington reporter Zoe Barnes (Kate Mara), and others who are fortunate enough to work with them or unfortunate enough to get in the way. The series has received critical acclaim since its debut, with the first season winning three Emmy Awards and earning nine nominations.

Theaster Gates is an American installation artist, who is also chairman of the Rebuild Foundation. The Foundation helps neighborhoods through culture-driven development by revitalizing abandoned spaces in under-served communities with arts and culture. It currently oversees projects in Chicago, St. Louis, and Omaha. Through it, teams of artists, architects, developers, educators, community activists, and residents participate to develop training and entrepreneurship to transform neighborhoods. It aims to use art to bring communities closer together and help them thrive.

Seth MacFarlane is an American actor, animator, writer, producer, director, and singer. He directs and stars in the upcoming movie A Million Ways to Die in the West. Set in Arizona, a sheep farmer named Albert (MacFarlane) who loses his girlfriend (Amanda Seyfried) because he refused a duel. Another woman catches his eye (Charlize Theron) and helps him regain his confidence. He comes to lover her, but problems arise when her infamous criminal husband (Liam Neeson) comes back to town. The cast also includes Giovanni Ribisi, Sarah Silverman, and Neil Patrick Harris.

Jim DeMint is an American politician, former United States Senator from South Carolina, and member of the Tea Party faction of the Republican Party. His book Falling in Love With America Again gives examples of people coming together in their communities in “little platoons.” These include families, churches, and voluntary organizations within a community to prove that “smaller is better.” DeMint believes that these are the people that make America great. He thinks that many Americans despair over the future because they think it is too late to change it, but his book aims to prove otherwise.

Paul Taylor (Author, “The Next America: Boomers, Millennials, and the Looming Generational Showdown“)

Paul Taylor is an American author and the executive vice president of special projects at the Pew Research Center. His book The Next America discusses the coming shift in American demographics. He is particularly concerned with generation gaps that have been present in a variety of political issues, and argues that today’s Millennial generation is in danger of having a lower standard of living than their parents, while a large group of Baby Boomers are retiring every year. He shares predictions about future demographic shifts in the US, while advocating more balanced spending to help overcome some of the projected imbalances. The information used to write the book was taken from surveys by the Pew Research Center. The book has received positive reviews from critics, with Kirkus Review calling it “An incisive survey of vast recent changes in American society and the ever-wider generation gap between baby boomers and millennials…. In this well-written, data-rich book, Taylor…examines the demographic, economic, social, cultural and technological changes that are reshaping the nation…”
