Charity Support – Part 2

Stephen Colbert was the special guest at the 100 Women in Hedge Funds New York Gala 2012, which raised $1.4 million for DonorsChoose. The global non-profit organisation has also launched a special initiative to invite its global members to donate additional funds to support schools affected by Hurricane Sandy in New York and New Jersey.

The staff of The Colbert Report, along with friends of the show, are about to get a little hairier – all in support of Stephen’s signature charity (and ours!), donorschoose. Notable TCR staffers such as Paul Dinello, Matt Lappin, director Jim Hoskinson, and many others are, as they put it, “subjecting themselves to public humiliation and private doubt” by offering to grow mustaches throughout the month of October in a project entitled “Mustaches for Kids.”

You can show your love for the mustache-growers by sponsoring them individually on “The Colbert Report Growers” page. It will be great to see Paul Dinello with a flowing mustache, so be sure to give generously. As for the participants – share some pics please! Or it didn’t happen!

Fans of actor/comedian Stephen Colbert in the Spokane, Washington area have an opportunity to join the bear-fearing fake pundit in a new effort to help support active military personnel from the United States and other countries.

On Monday, May 21, the social news site Reddit launched a new gift exchange program that encourages people to send care packages to Reddit users who are currently serving with any branch of their country’s armed services.

According to Christine Erickson of Mashable, “The initiative is part of a larger ongoing project, ‘redditgifts.’ This [Secret Santa] style gift exchange allows users to swap goods with each other. Past redditgifts exchanges have presented users with DVDs, letters, basic necessities and even a laptop.

“The troops gift exchange launched [Monday] — and comedian Stephen Colbert has already claimed the first spot on the list of gift givers, or ‘[S]antas.’”

From the Examiner:

“Six military non-profits have teamed up with San Jose giant eBay.com in order to honor veterans this Memorial Day as part of the online auction site’s three-week “Honoring Our Heros” campaign. The campaign is organized to help bring awareness and raise funds for organizations who provide services and support to service members, veterans and their families within the community.

The campaign began on May 14, 2012 and will run through June 3, 2012 on eBay’s website, eBay.com. Each week a different organization will be featured.

May 14-21: Blue Star Families & USO will be featured.

• The first of three Brooks Bros. suits worn and signed by Stephen Colbert will be auctioned off, will all proceeds benefitting USO, Blue Star Families and Team Rubicon.

Anyone can participate in the “Honoring our Heros” Campaign on eBay.com. Supporters can participate by buying items on eBay.com which have been designated as donating 10%-100% of the proceeds to the named charities. Shoppers can also buy anything on eBay’s website and donate that item directly to the nonprofit of their choice.”

You can check out the ebay listings of Stephen’s suits here and here.

How awesome is it that Stephen is donating his suits to this cause? Nation, bids are only at $250.00 or so, and these auctions end soon. Colbert Platinum members step up, so we can help out an organization that supports military members and their families.

In honor of Stephen’s birthday today, May 13th, our staff at Colbert News Hub have added some new projects to our DonorsChoose Giving Page. What better way to commemorate our favorite host’s birthday than to give a man who has everything something that never goes out of style – a donation to his signature charity. We recognize that times are tough, and we promise not to hold “drives” more than twice a year. If you were thinking of sending Stephen something for his birthday, consider making a charitable donation to some of the projects highlighted on our giving page instead, as it will definitely make a lasting impact in the lives of some deserving kids. With the Joy Machine powered down over these next couple weeks, we thought it would be good to update all of you in the Hubsterdom on CNH’s charitable initiative, The Colbert News Hub’s Giving Page.

Since the Giving Page’s launch in October, with the support of 12 Hubster donors we have raised $976, and helped 462 children. We have completed projects that have provided kids in South Carolina with books to help their math fluency, beautiful new violins for homeless students, music stands for a school without a music budget, and books to help children appreciate ancient civilizations. Our many thanks to the Hubsters, many of whom immediately pledged money to help fund these projects.

We here at Colbert News Hub wanted to do something special to mark ‘The Colbert Report’s’ 6th Year Anniversary. We wanted our gift to be something that both Stephen and the Report staff would all appreciate, especially after all the hard work and effort they put into making an amazing show each night.

After a bit of thinking, we decided upon starting our very own Colbert News Hubs DonorsChoose Giving Page.

Our aim with the ‘giving page’ is to focus on schools in Stephen’s home state of South Carolina. After seeing how much Stephen loves his hometown from the ‘Conde Nast Traveler Awards’, and how much it has influence him, we want all children in South Carolina to grow up as happy as Stephen, and have the same access to great educational materials and resources.

With over 50 projects listed for schools in South Carolina, we have narrowed it down to two that we would first like to complete:

To start the ball rolling Colbert News Hub has made a $250 donation to the ‘Reading for Success in Maths’ project, and have already received a wonderful ‘thank you’ email from the teacher Ms. Wilson.
