Brooklyn based rock band ‘Baba Yaga’ was brought into being with the joining of Morgan Jesse Lapin (drums / vocals), Dave Keen (guitar / violin / vocals) and Zach Rose (bass / guitar / keys / vocals). With influences ranging from Motown, Garage, Surf, Classical and Tribal, the trio self describe their sound as ‘a series of varied tonal qualities performed simultaneously over a succession of percussive slaps and thuds in several assorted time measures and motifs’. In 2012, the trio composed the theme for ‘The Colbert Report’s Hobbit Week’ entitled ‘The Pundit: Or Colbert and Back Again’, and in March 2013 released their self-titled studio album ‘Baba Yaga’.

With its trademark humor, irreverence and originality, The Second City is giving the classic Charles Dickens’ Christmas tale a hearty twist.
Dickens’ famous Victorian streets spring to life as Scrooge, Tiny Tim, that fat, plucked goose and those know-it-all ghosts find themselves hopelessly mixed up with anachronistic characters, hilarious improv and an ever-changing stable of starry, drop-in special guests. Writers Peter Gwinn (formerly of The Colbert Report) and Bobby Mort (currently of The Colbert Report) join Director Marc Warzecha (Resident Director, The Second City) and a cast which features Frank Caeti (MADtv), Larry Joe Campbell (According to Jim), Dan Castellaneta (The Simpsons), Amanda Blake Davis (Second City Does Dallas at the Dallas Theatre Center), Brian Stepanek (The Suite Life of Zack and Cody) and Jean Villepique (Up All Night).

Hailing from Winnipeg, the Toronto-based Sharilyn Johnson has done it all – writer, performer, communications professional, entertainment reporter and radio host. An entertainment reporter since 1995, Sharilyn’s focus turned to comedy in 1998, serving as the comedy reporter for Winnipeg’s entertainment weekly Uptown Magazine and hosted three seasons of the weekly radio program ‘Laugh Tracks’ on CJUM. Sharilyn’s comedy coverage and contributions have also been heard on CBC Radio’s ‘Laugh Out Loud’, and featured in the Winnipeg Free Press and ‘The Apiary’.
In 2008 Sharilyn founded the popular comedy news site Third Beat Magazine featuring comedy related news, events, reviews, and interviews, and is the current Chair of the Communications Committee for the Canadian Comedy Awards & Festival. A student of ‘Television and Sketch Writing’ at The Second City Toronto, and ‘Writing for The Daily Show’ with J.R. Havlan (Writer) and ‘Writing for The Colbert Report’ with Tom Purcell (Writer, Exec Producer) at the People’s Improv Theatre, Sharilyn can now be seen at the Toronto Fringe Festival performing her one women show ‘Fake News Fangirl’, ‘the completely true story of one women’s adventures in the world of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert fandom’.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to incorporate a pole(s), it can be any type, into a photograph with the book or audiobook of “I Am A Pole (And So Can You)” in the most interesting, creative, and imaginative way possible.
If you are camera-shy, that is ok, you do not need to appear in the photo yourself, just the book and a random pole somewhere out there in the universe need to be featured in the photo. If you know your location and the type of pole you are shooting, feel free to include that information in your submission. To ensure that everyone has a fair chance at entering, we have split the competition into three different categories.

At Penn State, Sophia A. McClennen wears many hats: she’s a Professor of Comparative Literature, Spanish, and Women’s Studies; the Director of the Center for Global Studies; and Director of the Graduate Program in Comparative Literature. While much of her work involves Latin American media and literature — McClennen is the author of Ariel Dorfman: An Aesthetics of Hope, about the Chilean author and activist, as well as of the upcoming Globalization and Latin American Cinema— she also writes about culture, politics, and social change. This focus makes Stephen a perfect subject for her cultural criticism, as seen by her regular blog entries to The Huffington Post, many of which center around The Colbert Report. Her newest book, previously titled America According to Colbert: Satire as Public Pedagogy, is available in hardcover, and will be released in paperback in early July, retitled Colbert’s America: Satire and Democracy.

On March 29th Stephen Colbert issued a challenge to college students to start a collegiate chapter of his SuperPAC: Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow. Remy Maisel, a Penn State Animal Science Major, and amateur media critic for The Huffington Post accepted the challenge, and has since gone on to recruit over two hundred students, staff and faculty, including Sophia A. McClennen author of ‘America According to Colbert: Satire as Public Pedagogy’ to the Penn State SuperPAC: Penn Staters For A Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow.
