Craig Kilborn Interviews Jon Stewart on 'The Daily Show'

Welcome to “A Look Back,” where we review and celebrate select clips from the overwhelmingly voluminous video catalog and the many splendid works of Stephen T. Colbert Jon Stewart over the years.

Ah, the poignancy: in the early days of The Daily Show, fledgling host Craig Kilborn interviewed the man who would eventually take the reigns and built said show into an Emmy factory – Mr. Jon Stewart. The interview is remarkably cordial, complete with Jon pointing out their gargantuan height difference and asking Craig polite questions about how the (then new) show was going. Hmmm. Smooth operator. Check it out:

What do you guys think of the video? I am digging the young Jon with the facial hair. Aesthetics aside, watching these two gents side by side you get a sense of how much more evolved The Daily Show became under Jon’s steady hand. Segments like, “Five Questions,” which you see here, complete with random guy’s head smashing graphics, would be swiftly eliminated. It would be three long years before Jon came on board and retooled the show to a more sophisticated, politically-focused platform.
