Stephen Colbert and his viewers learned the hard way on Tuesday night that MTV’s Video Music Awards are still a force in television and the music industry that is not to be trifled with.
“The Colbert Report” had advertised with fanfare that Daft Punk, the elusive French D.J. duo, would appear on its annual music show. The booking was a coup, since Daft Punk’s media appearances are very rare, and also demonstrated the cachet that Mr. Colbert and his show have acquired. Even the night before, it seemed, everything appeared to be on track. “Stephest Colbchella ’013 starts tomorrow 8/6 with Daft Punk!” Mr. Colbert tweeted late Monday.
But as revealed on the show, the band cancelled because of its obligations to MTV’s awards, where, Mr. Colbert seemed happy to note, Daft Punk was set to make a “surprise” appearance on Aug. 25.

It’s time to get excited, Daft Punk fans!! As we here at the Hub had reported earlier this week, it’s now official:
This Tuesday 8/6, don’t miss Stephest Colbchella ‘013: The Song of the Summer Of the Century with special guest Daft Punk. Details to come.

Not a lot of notice for this special episode, but we’re glad to see a wonderful “Colbchella” taking place after all, especially with the marvelous, helmeted duo. What songs are you hoping to hear on the special? Let us know your thoughts. Special thanks to Daft Punk-ers for almost crashing our site with their interest in this upcoming event.
Last night Stephen Colbert made a surprise appearance on ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’ (07:20 – 08:15), dancing his way onto the show, Stephen boogied-on down with Jimmy Fallon to Daft Punk’s new single ‘Get Lucky’ (feat. Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers) from their new album ‘Random Access Memory’, before dancing his way back behind the blue curtain.
Not as random as it seems, the bit is all to do with the upcoming appearance of Daft Punk on ‘The Colbert Report’.
(Thank you to Tish and Clem for the Tip!)
