Hello Hubsters! Welcome to our final guide for the week! I hope you all enjoyed the show last night. There were great guests, and great segments on the show. We got to see Stephen rap, and we also got to hear his Chicago accent. Here is your guide Hubsters, Enjoy!
Monologue
Stephen started the show by first reassuring us that we were getting the real Stephen Colbert.
- Welcome to The Late Show, I’m Stephen Colbert, or am I? I am.
Stephen then started to talk about one of his favorite things … food! The food story of the day was that Pepperidge Farms was suing the supermarket Trader Joe’s, for selling a cookie that looked too much like the popular Pepperidge Farm Milano’s. Stephen loves Milano’s, especially the cool ranch and blazin’ buffalo flavors. Stephen knows he talks about food a lot on the show, but only because it’s important to him, after all, he is half food.
- I realize I talk a lot about food on the show, but food is an important subject. After all, if you are what you eat, then I’m like half food. The other half is those pieces of paper they put between cheese slices to try to slow you down. Nice try, not even a speed bump, as far as I’m concerned.
Stephen doesn’t know which side is right in this situation. But, he does know how he can decide who’s right… bring on the cookies!
- I don’t know which side is right. The only way for me to know for sure, is if these cookie companies, uhhhhhh send me a lot of them. I promise to be an impartial judge, I will keep an open mind, and an open mouth.
Stephen mentions that this strategy has worked for him before with Oreos. The last time Stephen mentioned Oreos on the show they sent him 150 packages of them. They also sent Stephen a special Oreo phone, for when he has a cookie emergency.
- They sent me a dedicated Oreo phone, with a pre-programmed button in the middle for me to push, that automatically calls Oreo headquarters if we ever run out. This is absolutely true.
Stephen suggests maybe other cookie companies send him a smart phone, that can track when his mouth needs cookies. Just a note to the cookie companies, clean the smart phone before you send it.
Lucy in the Sky with Tech Support
Before Stephen went into his next segment for the night, he thanked a few people for all the creative design work that they put into the show. He thanked the director and creator of the opening credits for the show, Fernando Livschitz. The credits used on the show are 46.8 seconds long (thank you Jon Batiste for that info). The original credits are about 2-3 minutes long. The extended version of the opening credits is available on cbslateshow.com, go check it out! Don’t forget to sing along to the theme song lyrics as you watch the video.
- Feel free to sing along with our official lyrics, It’s The Late Show, and it’s coming right up, it’s The Late Show, and it’s coming right uppppppppp, The Lateeeeeee, Show, late.
Stephen then thanked all of those involved with the design and art aspects for the Ed Sullivan Theater. First he thanked Jim Fenhagen, who also designed The Colbert Report set. He also thanked Larry Hartman, the set design shop Black Walnut, Neil Tucker, Ojay Obinani, Charlie Ciccarelli, and Tom Miriello, and Bravo Media. Stephen also thanked Les Moonves, and promised that he will pay him back, as soon as he finds Ed Sullivan’s Gold.
Stephen then went on to say that creativity is an important part of the show, it’s a close tie with doughnuts.
- If you ask me the most important thing you can bring to your job is creativity, and doughnuts. People love it when you bring doughnuts, but really close behind that it’s creativity.
Stephen then talked about the tech titans at Silicon Valley, and their way of enhancing their creativity, which is by using Acid. Although it does explain the Google doodle last week.
- Even I have to question the latest Silicon Valley work place trend. According to Rolling Stone magazine, tech execs are now taking “Regular doses of Acid, which have become the creativity enhancer of choice.” Which explains why last week the Google doodle was “spider’s crawling on your face.”
The tech people over at Silicon Valley are doing a thing called microdosing, which is taking a very small portion of LSD, to enhance their creativity. Stephen doesn’t believe in drug usage being the best way to enhance creativity, well as long as it’s legal.
- You don’t need some illegal mind altering substance to be creative everyday. You just need legal mind altering substances. For instance, I use coffee. I take it with cream and sugar, and by cream I mean bourbon, and by sugar I mean Xanax.
Interview — Lin Manuel Miranda
The band made sure to welcome Lin by playing the music of his people, and added a little Latin flair to his intro number. Lin Manuel Miranda is the composer of the hit Broadway musical Hamilton, which is about the life of one of the founding fathers of America, Alexander Hamilton. The show is doing fantastic right now, and is a little difficult to get tickets to. The two talked of their love for musical theater, and Stephen started to talk about his Hamilton experience.
Stephen: Could you get us 400 tickets to Hamilton?
Miranda: Look under your chairs! I wish, I wish, If I had that Oprah power I would do it.
Stephen: For me, I went and saw it (Hamilton), and I went , and I didn’t know really what to expect, I heard good things. My first reaction was just like, “Oh this is very interesting, very different, I wonder how long they could sustain this”. Then you go, “Oh this is actually quite magnificent”. Then two hours later I’m going, “Why am I crying over Alexander Hamilton?” Is that a common reaction?
Miranda: It is a common reaction. I think a lot of people think it’s going to be sort of very clever and they’re going to be lots of knowing winks, but Alexander Hamilton had this really full and tragic American life.
The two talked about Hamilton being taken off the 10 dollar bill. They discussed the many things Hamilton has done, and also the history of New York being portrayed in the musical as well. Aaron Burr was also discussed, he is the person who killed Alexnader Hamilton.
Miranda: He used to walk around and he’d say, My friend Alexander Hamilton who I shot.
Stephen: Oh wow. Did it bother him for the rest of his life?
Miranda: Yeah, he was sort of a haunted dude for the rest of his life. He may have tried to go annex Mexico, and declare himself emperor. Umm, there might be a sequel in the works. I mean he has this whole crazy other life.
Stephen and Miranda talked about certain songs in the musical, and also about some of the characters. Miranda also talked about how he got into loving musical theater, and talked about shows he saw as a kid. Stephen pitched his musical idea about doing a show based on Button Gwinnett, who signed The Declaration of Independence. Stephen tells Miranda that it’s a one song play, and then he proceeds to play a clip they have of this song, that Stephen and Miranda did together. We got to see Stephen’s rap skills, maybe he should audition for Miranda’s next musical.
Interview — Ike Barinholtz
The very funny Ike Barinholtz was on the show. He stars in the upcoming Tina Fey and Amy Poehler movie “Sisters”. Ike plays the romantic lead in the movie. Stephen and Ike talked about the film, and how Ike had to get sexy for this role.
Stephen: Did you have to get sexy for it?
Barinholtz: I had to get sexy. Uhhhh, I had a new hair system put in. This is real human hair right here (points to one side of head), this is rat hair (points to other side of head). I also had to lose a couple of pounds.
Stephen: Really? How many is a couple?
Barinholtz: I lost about 25 pounds, really quickly.
Audience: *Cheered and Applauded*
Barinholtz: Thank you!
Stephen: Those are the few people out there that really thought, “He really needed to, it was time.”
Barinholtz: In the movie I have to be shirtless.
Stephen: Oh wow, you could not pay me enough.
Barinholtz: Really?
Stephen: No, those days are over my friend.
Barinholtz: Well I was nervous, cause I have thick European Jewish chest hair. Someone was like “Oh are you gonna trim it?” I was like “Oh yeah, obviously.” One patch was a little hairy over here, and I clipped it way too short, so I had to do the other side, but then I started looking like patchy, like I had mange, like a sick dog. So then I just clipped the whole thing, by myself.
Stephen: They have people who will wax you, you know.
Barinholtz: No, no I thought about that, but I’m a coward at heart.
Stephen: I had to do that once for a part, I had to get my chest waxed. I went to a salon, and a very no-nonsense German woman said “We do the nipples last.” I’m telling you, she knew what she was talking about.
The two also talked about being from Chicago, and the comedy that comes from there. We also got to hear Stephen’s Chicago accent, as the two improved a little Chicago talking bit.
