December 9th, 2013: The Taping ReporT!

graphic-taping-report-3591851 Hubster StephJaar has sent us this wonderful “Taping ReporT” of her trip to the December 9th taping of “The Colbert Report”.

I went to my first taping of the Colbert Report on Monday, Dec. 9, 2013. I call it my first taping because I had so much fun, I definitely want to go back someday!

I’ve been in a few TV audiences before, but being a part of the Colbert Report was one of the best experiences. How could it not be!?

The wait in line wasn’t terrible. I arrived around 4 p.m. and waited in a line next to the building under a tarp. It was cold, but luckily I had prepared with multiple layers, gloves, hats, etc. The line would officially be closed off at six, but a couple of minutes beforehand they started letting us into the audience waiting room and pass through security. The waiting room is awesome, with “Best of” clips from “The Colbert Report” playing, a countless of silly pictures of Stephen Colbert.

If there’s one thing to know about being in the audience is that there’s a lot of waiting around. After being seated in the studio, we waited for what felt like forever before Paul the entertainer came out. Truthfully, it was probably only 30 minutes but it felt longer.

I was not expecting having that Q&A with Stephen Colbert out of character before he show, so it was a welcome surprise! The first question someone from the audience asked was, “Do you make love to you wife in character?” Woah. Stephen played it off well, though, after cracking a few jokes. Then he got serious and said, “No,” and moved onto the next question. It was definitely refreshing to see him out of character, but even as himself, he’s still hilarious. There’s absolutely no denying it.

Watching the actual taping was fascinating. Colbert nailed every segment, never messing up a line. It was cool to see him jotting notes on the script during the four seconds he had while a clip was showing and then jumping so quickly back into character. And then during the “commercial breaks” the writers would congregate around the desk to discuss the jokes.

All in all, the taping lasted a little under an hour. I laughed and hollered and whooped until my throat was dry. Can’t wait to go back again!
