Since its premiere, The Late Show has raised eyebrows by booking an eclectic mixture of guests each night. Having CEOs on the show, for example, is particularly unusual. Fast Company caught up with Stephen’s longtime booker, Emily Lazar, for a glimpse into the guest-booking strategy for the new show:
“We are a long way from the era of the man in the gray flannel suit,” says Emily Lazar, co-executive producer and head of talent booking at The Late Show. “Many of the CEOs we’re going after for the show are changing the world, and at a very fast pace. Our audience is interested in knowing about the people who are harnessing technology to reorder the way we live.”
[…] As Lazar explains, what she’s looking for when booking guests like inventor and designer Dominic Wilcox—who appeared on last night’s show—is the broad description of anyone at the top of their respective games, and who possesses that catchall buzzword: “authenticity.”
“If you have ideas, or if you have interests, or you have a body of knowledge that is genuine, that you have committed your life to, we are infinitely interested in that,” Lazar says. “Because at the end of the day, Stephen has to talk to a person and that person has to represent their ideas and their beliefs and their motivation persuasively. We’re looking for authenticity like everyone else.”

It seems like elements of The Colbert Report are still having their impact on guest selection for The Late Show, in that thinkers, movers and shakers, and innovators are still finding their way to Stephen’s guest chair, in addition to the standard fare of Hollywood starlets. What do you Hubsters think of the guest roster so far? Is it staying true to Stephen’s sense of humor and intellectual curiosity, or too serious for The Late Show?

CBS announced today the award-winning writing and producing team joining host, executive producer and writer Stephen Colbert for his new late night series, THE LATE SHOW with STEPHEN COLBERT.
Colbert brings with him many members of his Emmy and Peabody Award-winning team from “The Colbert Report.” Tom Purcell, who served as executive producer and writer, will continue in the same role for THE LATE SHOW. In addition, Meredith Bennett will serve as executive producer, expanding her previous role as co-executive producer.
Emily Lazar and Barry Julien, both from “The Colbert Report,” have been named co-executive producers. Additionally, Julien will retain his duties as a writer and Lazar will head the talent department. Head writer Opus Moreschi (“The Colbert Report”) adds supervising producer to his title and will work alongside Jay Katsir (“The Colbert Report”), who has been promoted to head writer. Also from “The Colbert Report,” Matt Lappin and Paul Dinello join the production as supervising producers/writers. THE LATE SHOW will be directed by Jim Hoskinson (“The Colbert Report”). Tanya Bracco (“The Colbert Report”) will serve as supervising producer and executive-in-charge.
New to Colbert’s team is Emily Gertler (“Good Morning America”), who joins THE LATE SHOW as senior entertainment producer. Sheryl Zelikson will be the music producer, joining THE LATE SHOW after holding the same title for the “Late Show with David Letterman.”

When Stephen made a reference to the fact that he only has one female writer, as he accepted his Emmy in August, for “Outstanding Variety Show”, he then apologized, “for some reason”. What I thought he was trying to say when he said that was actually more the opposite. I don’t think he should have to apologize at all. He has done nothing wrong. However, many people in the media seem to disagree judging by the number of recent articles commenting on that one line in his Emmy acceptance speech. So we here at the Hub have delved into this issue, analyzed it and here are the results. The opinions expressed in this piece are mine and not necessarily representative of Colbert News Hub as a whole.
