Fan Art: Time 100 Commemorative Book

Fan Art highlights the glorious manifestations of Stephen, as rendered by fans and talented artists.

Note: There is a little gift at the bottom of this post! So be sure to read on.

Cleveland based graphic designer Jameson Campbell created a marvelous book, styled in the format of I Am America (And So Can You!) yet with the reverence of a true fan’s appreciation of our fearless host. The typesetting and layout pays homage to the style of Stephen’s book, yet references many popular segment/topics/wondrous Stephen creations on the Report, such Smokin’ Pole, Cheating Death, Tek Jansen, and even Stephanie Colburtle the Turtle.

Jameson was kind enough to answer some of my questions about this work. Naturally, I was curious as to how he decided upon Stephen and the Report as the subject for such a creation. He answered as follows:

“The book that I created was for a student project while I was in college at Kent State University. The project was to celebrate a person off of the Time magazine Time 100 List. Many of my classmates were picking classic entries from some of the original Time 100 List that came out in 1999 like Albert Einstein and Gandhi but I wanted to do something different. Stephen was nominated for and won a spot as a Time 100 finalist in 2008 along with Steve Jobs, Barack Obama and many soon to be historically important figures. Since I wanted to focus on the present, I chose Stephen because of the overwhelmingly effective nature of his satire and the quick success of his show after leaving the Daily Show in 2005.”

The 30 page work, divided into four chapters, looks and feels like I Am America, but references Stephen’s entire career, and has many notable photos of the show’s (and Stephen’s) finest moments. There are some nice quotes isolated and interspersed throughout:

Jameson also focused on the Report’s demographic reach and overall media influence, and on that topic he had this to say:

“I definitely did a lot of research into the demographics of both The Colbert Report and The Daily Show at the time. It was very interesting to me that they discovered, reach out to and effectively speak to a very broad stroke of viewers in the 18 to 34 range. The show takes a bit of an education in the world stage to get a lot of the humor. What I think is particularly genius about the show though, is that even if you are not [meaning to], you will find yourself learning [in the process].

When it came to my end of the book, Stephen character and over humor of the show was what drew me to the subject since I fit into that demographic myself. On personality alone it lends itself well to all sorts of creative solutions, but I chose to make the overall style reflective of the modern political campaign look as well as including more visually dynamic possibilities that fit Stephen’s character. It was all about personality.”

Indeed, Stephen’s personality shines through in this work, as well as the reverence one comes to expect from a fine piece of Fan Art. Just for all of us at Colbert News Hub, Jameson has made available a high resolution copy of his book for download, which you can access here. Be sure to check it out.
