The media isn’t paying much attention to Newt Gingrich anymore (his campaign announced last night that they were dramatically scaling back their staff, resigned to more or less sit the race out until the convention) but it’s not for lack of trying. Lately, this very smart man (and he is) seems to be caught in one of those Coulter-ian downward spirals, saying ever more outrageous things to stoke controversy and breathe new energy into his faltering campaign. In fact, Gingrich is starting to sound more like Stephen Colbert’s parody conservative than that of a presidential candidate. So here’s a quiz: Who said it—Newt Gingrich or Stephen Colbert? Click on the name to find the correct answer, and determine how far Newt’s gone.
1. “A mere forty years ago, beach volleyball was just beginning. No bureaucrat would have invented it, and that’s what freedom is all about.”

3. “If we’d spent as much on space as we’ve spent on farm programs, we could have taken all the extra farmers and put them on space stations working for a living in orbiting factories.”
