In The Press — March 2013

When news stories fall through the cracks, we here at Colbert News Hub catch it for a post we call “In the Press”.

Happy Pi day, Happy Ides of March and Happy St. Patty’s Day!

Well, I’m afraid Stephen has not been named new Pope. What an ITP post that would’ve been huh? Alas, Pope (Sub) Urban will have to wait. However, that’s not to say there haven’t been some interesting news items involving Stephen, Jon, and everyone else in the world directly related to Colbert Nation.

In this edition, watching the Colbert Report means you’re smart, Jon’s hiatus, Stephen’s thoughts on the new Pope, Elizabeth Colbert-Busch’s first campaign ad and her major donors, you can get a degree from Second City, and the new late night landscape.

The Colbert Report

  • Facebook Says You’re Smart If You Like Curly Fries or Stephen Colbert.

“The best predictors of high intelligence include ‘thunderstorms,’ ‘The Colbert Report,’ ‘science’ and ‘curly fries,’” the study said.

This study, which proves that Facebook is in the business of storing information about everyone who uses it, says that people who enjoy watching ‘The Colbert Report’ have high IQ’s. The study was done by two men at the Psychometrics Centre at the University of Cambridge. They were able to predict with a very high amount of accuracy, things like whether a person had parents who were divorced, used drugs and whether they leaned liberal or conservative. The last two seem pretty obvious but what’s really interesting is that they could tell whether your parents are divorced.

In this article from the New York Post, Michael Shain talks about how Stephen has helped his sister Elizabeth to get some big names from the NYC area, to donate to her campaign. Her campaign has filed reports recently and those reports revealed who those donors are.

  • Inside Jon Stewart Leaving ‘The Daily Show’: Why He Has No Reason to Return

Of course, we all worry that maybe Jon will not be able to resist that siren call of Hollywood after he finishes directing his first feature film. It’s very possible and I guess we have to consider it. It’s not like he hasn’t entertained the option of leaving TDS before. He wanted Jimmy Kimmel’s gig and was being considered for it.

I think he will return though. Hopefully maybe his next project could be done while still doing TDS. After all, they get a lot of weeks off during the year.

“As a longtime Stewart Scholar—an unofficial title, strictly speaking—I am gripped with fear over this so-called hiatus. Once our Jon gets a taste of the power and prestige that comes with being a Hollywood director, he’ll never want to return to the little pond of Comedy Central.

Much as I hate to say it, Stewart has many more reasons to move on than to come back.

At the soul-searching age of 50, he’s ready for a major life change. Having hosted Daily Show since 1999, he has done it all—big money, acclaim, a cool quotient beyond measure. In his current incarnation, he has nothing left to prove.”

  • Jon Stewart Says Directorial Debut ‘Just Kind Of Happened’

A piece from MTV news about Jon’s directorial debut:

“The Times didn’t fail to point out that producer Scott Rudin has a history with Oscar success, especially when “Rosewater” will film in the same year another movie based in Iran, “Argo,” won Best Picture, but Stewart quickly deflected premature awards talk.

‘Oh, yes, because that is a great expectation to put on a first-time director,’ Stewart said.”

  • What Is Rosewater, the Movie Taking Jon Stewart Away from ‘The Daily Show’?

An article from Time magazine that goes into more detail about what the movie Jon is leaving us for, is about:

“The movie, which is also written by Stewart (his first go at screenwriting), is based on the 2011 book Then They Came for Me: A Family’s Story of Love, Captivity, and Survival by Maziar Bahari and Aimee Molloy. Bahari, a London-based journalist, went to Iran in 2009 for what was supposed to be a quick story about that country’s presidential election. Instead, while his pregnant fiancée waited for him, he spent months at Evin Prison, being interrogated by a man (whose sole distinguishing feature, to the usually blindfolded Bahari, was that he smelled of rosewater). Bahari’s memoir also recounts the contemporary history of Iran.”

Six Degrees

  • Late Night Hosts: Does Anyone Get Out Alive?

So Leno is retiring. Right. Anyway, this will shake things up again in the world of Late Night and this article from the site, Splitsider, examines how Conan has not used his perch at TBS to break out of the predictable late night talk show format, but also that not all hope is lost for him. The piece talks a little about Jon and Stephen and their roles in the world of late night TV.

“Conan O’Brien still continues to create some of the most innovative comedy on television, as evidenced by last month’s surprisingly entertaining “Occupy Conan” episode. However, far too many groundbreaking sketches on Conan are sandwiched between tired monologue jokes about Bruce Jenner and interviews with starlets du jour. This refusal to alter the traditional talk show format — as opposed to Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert — runs the danger of exhausting O’Brien and worse, making him irrelevant.”

  • Columbia College Chicago, Second City Launch New Comedy Degree Program

If you’re interested in performing and writing and want more than just a theatre degree, check this out. It’s a new degree program designed for the modern era. It is designed to get students ready for all aspects of comedy performance, including improv and writing.

“Our partnership with Second City and our relationships with local comedy icons The Onion and the Chicago Improv and Sketch festivals provide connections and opportunities for students that are unmatched,” says Second City director of comedy studies Anne Libera, coordinator of the new program.”

  • Elizabeth Colbert Busch is a Jobs Creator

This is the first campaign ad. The primary is all of a sudden upon us, as of this writing. It’s in the next few days. The chances of her being the dem nominee are good, but we will wish her all the luck of the Irish anyway. The ad talks about her record as a Charleston businesswoman.

  • The Brian Lehrer Show: What the First Latino Pope Means

This is a podcast from March 15th. It’s an interview with Fr. James Martin about the election of the new Pope. Towards the end of the segment, Father Jim talks about Stephen and gives a little insight into how Stephen views the election of the new Pope. I’m wondering if you have to be Catholic to understand what Stephen meant, as conveyed by Father Jim. I’m not and I don’t. Stephen’s intellect is above me.
