When news stories fall through the cracks, we here at Colbert News Hub catch them for a post we call, In The Press.
Happy un-official start to the Summer! (for those of you living here in the U.S.) If you still have leftovers from your Memorial Day picnics, well so do we.
In this edition we go over the big stories that were breaking just before Stephen was announced as the new host of Late Show. There was a nice interview with Stephen’s wife, Evie and yet more stuff about late night TV.
The World of Late Night TV
TBS Cancels ‘The Pete Holmes Show’ After Two Seasons (Exclusive)
A week after extending ‘Conan’ through till 2018, TBS has opted not to renew ‘The Pete Holmes Show’. Produced by Conan O’Brien’s production company Conaco, the show was given two chances by TBS, but only managed to pull in an average of 500, 000 a night.
Arsenio Hall’s Late-Night Show is Canceled — A Surprise Move
Yes, it is a surprise move. And then there were…how many? Still a lot, actually.
Hall said in a statement: “When I started this adventure with CTD and Tribute, we all knew it would be a challenge — I’m gratified for the year we’ve had and proud of the show we created. I’d like to thank everyone on my staff for rallying around me and striving to make the best show possible each night.”
The series debuted last November. The cancellation came as a surprise, because it was announced in February that the series had been renewed for a second season.
Emmy Watch: How the Late Night Upheaval Could Shake Up the Variety Series Competition
So if it’s not too early to talk about the 2016 election season, it’s not too early to talk about the Emmys in the Fall. This year there will be more potential nominees because NBC can submit both versions of ‘The Tonight Show’ as well as both versions of ‘Late Night’. Also, CBS has a real shot this year due to both of it’s late night stars departing, but for that same reason, Stephen and crew have a shot at being the defending champions.
Seriously, Emmys, why you do not rename the category, “Outstanding Late Night Show” is beyond me. When was the last time a non-late night show was nominated?
Late Night TV: (Sort of) WABAC Edition
We here at the Hub are always compiling articles to feature and when the big news broke, first about #CancelColbert and then immediately after that, the Late Show news, some of these articles got shelved. There was just too much press. Well, here they are, dusted off for your reading pleasure.
‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ is a Month Old: Status Report
It might not seem to be that important now to include an article from mid-March, when J-Fal, as no one calls him, was just a month into his stint. However, if you read through this article, it’s interesting because of what we now know about the upcoming transition. When I read this in March, I was happy for Jimmy. Now I am more concerned than happy. I want Stephen to do well at CBS, but at the same time it means Jimmy won’t do as well. Let’s hope they can co-exist.
Here is one snippet from the article:
What is the Age of Fallon’s Viewers?
The average age is 54, or five years younger than Leno’s viewers, and “Late Show’s,” which is now the oldest audience in late-night TV. It’s also a year younger than Kimmel’s average.
Just to restate the obvious, youth rules in late night, or at least rules with advertisers — a key reason Fallon is now host of “Tonight.’ But the relative youth of Fallon’s crowd indicates that his “Tonight” has actually added new viewers to the mix. Leno’s “Tonight” was doing the exact opposite — losing them.
‘Tonight Show’ Getting $20 Million Tax Break
This article was written in late February. I think it’s still relevant because we still haven’t heard where Stephen’s ‘Late Show’ will film. Are they working out a deal to relocate? (please say no.) The tax break would not affect the Late Show because it’s already been in NYC:
The language of the 30 percent annual tax credit was remarkably specific: It would only benefit a show that had filmed at least five years in another state before moving to New York (check), spends at least $30 million in production costs (check) and films in front of a studio audience of at least 200 people (check). In other words: “The Tonight Show.”
I am still worried because they haven’t announced. Let’s see, move four blocks east on the same street they’ve been on in Manhattan for the past decade or so, or move across country from the east coast to the west coast? Hmmmm, seems like a no-brainer but yet we still don’t know.
Other Leftovers
Standing Ovation or Lost in Translation? The ‘Accidental’ Popularity of American Comedy Shows in China
Photo: SCMP Pictures
In China, Jon and Stephen are very popular, even though the shows don’t air on TV in China. The internet … is there anything it can’t do?
While neither The Daily Show nor The Colbert Report are available on mainstream Chinese television, netizens have taken distribution matters into their own hands. One particular site, thedailyshowcn.com, features nearly 500 video clips from Stewart’s show that have been translated and uploaded by fans. The website has had close to 1.6 million visits and has a Sina Weibo account with over 40,000 fans.
I would watch those. I think it might be interesting to see them translated into another language.
So, I Can’t Stream ‘The Daily Show’ Unless I Pay for Cable?
On the opposite end of the spectrum … Companies are making it harder for people to watch shows online if you don’t have a cable subscription or if you don’t have the right cable subscription. Typical Corporate American greedy companies … wait, what?
I don’t subscribe to TV. I’d much rather use online services than deal with a prescribed menu of channels on TV. Furthermore, I don’t see any reason why I should subscribe to multiple telecom services when at this point everything (voice, video, text) should be available through one open platform: the Internet.
Telecom companies, of course, prefer to get people to pay three or four times for these services (phone, cell phone, TV, Internet). Now, it seems at least one of them is willing to block online content as a pressure tactic to corner Canadians.
A-HA!! It’s those pesky Canadians again! I knew it! Blame Canada!
Of course, I am joking. I am sure that if this hasn’t happened already, American companies are looking to the CTV situation and thinking “Why didn’t we think of that?”
‘Truthiness’ is Vital to Political Speech, According to Humorist’s Amicus Brief
PJ O’Rourke invoked truthiness in a satirical amicus brief. This article talks about the brief.
The brief offers examples of truthy statements that contribute to political discourse, including: “Everybody knows that the economy is better off under [Republican/Democratic] presidents—who control it directly with big levers in the Oval Office.” A footnote tells the reader to circle the appropriate political party.
Any injury from truthy statements is best remedied by pundits, satirists and, if necessary, civil defamation suits, the brief says. Nor is government well-suited to examine falsehood. The brief offers this statement by President Barack Obama as an example: “If you like your health-care plan, you can keep it.” Politifact said the statement was accurate in 2008, but deemed it the “lie of the year” in 2013.
6 Times Stephen Colbert Got Serious About Faith
This is a nice read, but awfully slanted. It’s from Relevant magazine, a Christian website. Yes, Stephen is a devoted Catholic and he loves to challenge his guests, but I don’t think he was intentionally trying to “demolish” the two guests mentioned in the article, Philip Zimbardo and Bart Ehrman. He has said he is not trying to be like an assassin. He wants the guests to have fun.
Here is one of the six:
The Time He Discussed the Importance of Humor in Faith
In 2012, Stephen Colbert took part in an event called “The Cardinal and Colbert: Humor, Joy and the Spiritual Life” at Fordham University. Moderated by Rev. James Martin—Jesuit and priest and author—the event featured a light-hearted, but intelligent conversation about faith and humor between Colbert and Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York.
“If Jesus doesn’t have a sense of humor, I am in huge trouble,” Colbert joked at the event. Though the two discussed a variety of issues, the one thing Colbert made clear was the genuine love he has for the Body of Christ and being a part of the Church: “Are there flaws in the Church? Absolutely. But is there great beauty in the Church? Absolutely … The real reason I remain a Catholic is what the Church gives me, which is love.”
So read the rest of them with a joyful mind, but perhaps also with a grain of salt.
Montclair Film Festival to Open with “Chef”
There is a nice interview with Evie, from before the start of the Montclair Film Festival.
“I think that will be real exciting to have a larger crowd there,” said Evie Colbert, vice chairwoman of the board of directors. “It’ll have a kickoff feeling and it’s a great, great film, so I think that will be a wonderful way to start.”
In an effort to not turn people away this year, Colbert said, they sought other larger venues, including the Montclair Kimberley Academy auditorium.
“One of our key concerns is to reach a broad, diverse group of people,” said Colbert. “We are very conscious to try to keep ticket prices low and not be intimidating to people. But at the same time, we have very intellectual [films].”
If anyone who was there would like to reporT more about it, other than the lovely taping reporTs we already have, please do!

Both our boys are mentioned in this list of New Jersey’s most influential people. They are listed in the Entertainment section and the list at least appears to be in no particular order. Stephen is first, however. “In The Press: Memorial Day Leftovers Edition [UPDATE]”, out of 5 based on 2 ratings.
