When news stories fall through the cracks, we here at Colbert News Hub catch it for a post we call “In the Press”.
As this year comes to a close, I have to wonder the same thing I always wonder at this time of year, what is “auld lang syne”? I also wonder what is to come next year. 2014 is a midterm election year so let’s all strap in and hold on. It should be good.
Here is the final “ITP” for 2013. There are transvestites and bitcoin and Israel, oh my!
The Colbert Report
A Case Study in Transmisogyny: The Colbert Report & The Daily Show
This article is accusing both Stephen and Jon of making too many jokes at the expense of transvestites. I suppose it’s possible, but in reading the article it just seems to me that they cherry-picked all the jokes from the two shows, mostly Stephen’s, to make a case.
Jon and Stephen don’t really shy away from making biting jokes. I suppose at some point maybe it would be considered inappropriate, but I don’t think it’s become a problem. I think that if they only made jokes about transvestites and no other group, they’d be right, but we know that they make fun of just about every group at some point.
The Word
“They seem to think that a person who was assigned male and transitioned is inherently ugly. Personally, I think transgender women are beautiful, and that the people who try to humiliate them should be called out for it.”
What do you all think?
Kentucky town from ‘Colbert Report’ to Pay Police Chief in Bitcoin
Tony Vaughn
“A Kentucky town that gained national attention after being featured on Comedy Central’s Colbert Report earlier this year has granted its police chief’s request to be paid in the online currency Bitcoin.
The Hazard Herald reported that the city commission in Vicco approved Chief Tony Vaughn’s request on Monday after an initial investigation of its feasibility.
“The reason they wanted to pass the ordinance is, this allows us greater latitude as far as finding out the legalities of it,” Vaughn told the Herald.
But while continuing to research the implications of the move, Mayor Johnny Cummings told the Herald that Vaughn could begin to receive his salary in Bitcoin this month. However, federal and state taxes will be deducted from the payment before it is transferred from regular currency into the online format.”
That’s interesting. I would not want to be paid that way, but I guess to each his own.
The following article was actually written in September of 2012. Yes it does say it was written this past September but it clearly wasn’t.

“According to the old saw, polite people do not publicly discuss sex, money, politics or religion. Which is why comedians, our socially appointed purveyors of necessary rudeness, spend so much time talking about sex, money, politics and religion.
In these days of partisan rage and general raunch, it’s easy for comedians to talk about the first three. Religion is trickier — through some quirk in our cultural evolution, one’s thoughts about a Supreme Being and the nature of worship have become more closely guarded than our habits in the bedroom. There has been no Kinsey report on religion.
Fortunately there is instead “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central, which is having a very good year. During the last election, Colbert took performance art to a new level by running for president; this year he established his own “super PAC,” raising hundreds of thousands of dollars while exposing the absurdity of campaign financing laws, which super PACs were invented to flout.”
Even though this story fell through the cracks, we here at the Hub found it deeply embedded beneath the cushions.
Stephen is a very devoted Catholic and I’m going to go out on a limb here and say he got that from his parents, mostly his mother. He always loves to talk about her strong faith.
Stephen Colbert Is Cursive’s Biggest Cheerleader
This debate has been raging for a few months now. What do you all think? Should cursive be dropped from school curricula? My 2c? Well, I am all for teaching cursive, however, if something has to be cut, cursive is not as important as teaching typing skills or music or art. Actually, maybe it could be taught in art? HEY! There’s a solution.

Check out this video on Youtube. Friend of the show and man who spells his first name wrong, Steven Pinker talks about studying people, violence in our society and what it’s like to be interviewed by Stephen Colbert.
Stephen comes in at about (01:20) and Mr. Pinker has nice things to say about our hero.

The Daily Show
Israel’s ‘Daily Show’ Brings Its Satire To N.Y.
I know a lot of Americans are accused of being ignorant about what’s going on in the Middle East. I admit I am one of them. I do read up on it, but I just don’t get it. Maybe it’s one of those things where you have to go over there to really understand it.
The host, Lior Schleien, seems to think the US is not as much of an ally to Israel anymore.
“People here in Israel get the feeling that the Obama administration, and the U.S. in general, are not such good friends of ours anymore,” said Schleien. “We keep reading about the ways American Jews see us and the wrongdoings of the Israeli government. And so this is a good chance to come and see with our own eyes where we’re standing, because without America we are worth nothing in the middle of the Middle East.”
Since the show is coming to NYC in January, I wonder if Jon will try to get Lior on as a guest?
Should Anyone Get His News From a Comedian?
I can remember Artie Lange on The Howard Stern show, once being somewhat critical of Jon Stewart for the sheer reason that he gets nothing but good press. Well if that was ever true, this edition of ITP knocks that theory down.
“I have never watched Jon Stewart’s show, or any other program on Comedy Central. Life is too short. But I am aware that some people take Stewart seriously as a political commentator. In fact, the New York Times described him as perhaps “the most trusted man in America.” But why? I assume that Stewart is slightly above average in intelligence, but does he have any experience, knowledge or expertise that would qualify him to pontificate on matters economic or political? To my knowledge, no. Nevertheless, he is something of an idol on the political Left.”
I didn’t know you needed experience to pontificate on matters economic or political, especially to host a comedy program. However, how about the last 15 years hosting the show? Is that enough experience?
So I’m trying to wrap my head around this Codere story, but I don’t get it. What I have gathered is that the author of the article here and the one linked in it, and the people who have commented underneath the article, don’t like Jon. It’s kind of evident when you read a comment that calls Jon a “blathering idiot”.
So be it. Jon has always shied away from the idea that his audience gets all their news from him. I think he is way more intelligent than this article gives him credit for but I think he might agree with the article’s premise that you shouldn’t get your news from a comedian.
Well that closes out 2013 for In The Press! Have a safe and Happy New Year everyone!
