Oregon’s Rob Cornilles tries his hand at humor in the final hours before his special election.
“I humbly request the Colbert bump,” he says, leveraging his looks to play Stephen Colbert’s brother.
“Nothing wrong with having a bit of fun and showing a sense of humor during the seriousness of knock-down, drag out campaign when the DCCC and its allies are spending $2 million to make you look like evil incarnate,” writes Cornilles deputy campaign manager Mike Carew.

Stephen Colbert’s quasi-satirical presidential bid has raised serious cash — over $1 million, as of Tuesday morning, the comedian announced.
An announcement on the Web site of Mr. Colbert’s political action committee said the “super PAC” had filed $1,023,121.24 with the Federal Election Commission at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday. The super PAC — once known as the “The Definitely Not Coordinating With Stephen Colbert Super PAC,” then the “Colbert Super PAC,” but officially as “Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow” — raised money from viewers to fund things like a commercial shown in South Carolina that equated Mitt Romney with a serial killer.
“We raised it on my show and used it to materially influence the elections – in full accordance with the law. It’s the way our founding fathers would have wanted it, if they had founded corporations instead of just a country,” according to a release on the Web site, with contact details of someone named Alberto Rèalnamè, the communications director and an online “Clicktivist Organizr,” at bottom.
Donors listed in the 147-page document include Gavin Newsom, the lieutenant governor of California ($500). A representative from Mr. Newsom’s office confirmed in an e-mail that the lieutenant governor had in fact donated to the super PAC. Some celebrities’ names also turned up in the filing, including the actors Laura Sangiacomo, star of “Hot in Cleveland” ($250), and Bradley Whitford, a star of “The West Wing” ($250) — naturally. Mr. Colbert also received money from a Rolling Stones tribute group called “Sticky Fingers Band” ($400). None of these donors’ contributions to the committee could be immediately confirmed.

Hello, Hubsters–
I’m still happy from last week, especially the Maurice Sendak interview. That was such a surprise, and a fresh, new way to get the blogosphere buzzing after the political antics in South Carolina. Although the politics continue too, because so long as there’s a Republican debate, there’s a joke waiting to happen. And…
TO THE MOON, NEWT!
Neil deGrasse Tyson has commented on Newt’s sci-fi, cheese in the sky plan, but I’d love it if he’d come back to visit the Report on this momentous occasion to chat with Stephen about it. It’s the first time in years a Republican has supported a space program, and it’s just totally wacky. And hello, Newt: NASA is a government program, don’t you know?
This week’s guests are an eclectic bunch, from the worlds of law, journalism, music, and community activism (with a short detour into cinema).
So let’s go! Read more

Melville House announced today that it has offered wannabe children’s book author Stephen Colbert its biggest deal ever for a first book. After hearing Colbert describe his proposed illustrated children’s book, “I Am A Pole, And You Can Too” — the story of a lost pole that ultimately finds its purpose in life as a flagpole for the U.S. flag-–the company immediately offered the amateur scribe $500.
“That’s far more than we offered our authors Tao Lin and Bernard-Henri Levy, and even Imre Kertesz, and hell, he won the Nobel Prize,” said Melville House editor-in-chief Dennis Johnson. ”But although Colbert is a complete unknown in the children’s book world, he comes with some good blurbs, so we thought what the hell. We don’t know anything about kids’ books either.”
Johnson’s mention that the book already had “good blurbs” was a reference to praise I Am A Pole received during a 2 part conversation between Colbert and the reknown children’s book author Maurice Sendak [see below], wherein Sendak said of Colbert’s proposed book, “The sad thing is, I like it.”
Melville House is also offering a one-time signing bonus to the lucky writer. “We thought we’d take him out for pizza,” said Melville House publisher Valerie Merians. “See if we can loosen him up a little. He looked awful tense talking to a pro like Sendak.”
