Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are featured in the October 2012 issue of Vanity Fair, at #11 on “The Powers That Be” list. Just not quite powerful enough to beat out Jay-Z and Beyoncé at #8 (although according to the “Connections” feature, Jon Stewart has won a Grammy).
“Their ratings remain strong—2.4 million viewers for Stewart’s Daily Show and 1.7 million for The Colbert Report—but may actually understate the influence of Comedy Central’s late-night punch. Their satirical news programs regularly top the ratings of “real” news served up by Fox and CNN, and they’ve emerged as the most trenchant critics of media sensationalism. As Ted Koppel put it earlier this year, “They are doing a better job than the real journalists.” publicity coup: In a clever bit of political performance art, Colbert started a super-pac, “Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow.” The stunt got him masses of free press—including a televised Federal Election Commission hearing—and, amazingly, his political organization netted more than $1 million in contributions. Colbert used some of the money to produce and air a tongue-in-cheek attack ad during the Republican primaries implying that Mitt Romney was a serial killer.”
