July 17, 2006: The Taping ReporT!

graphic-taping-report-7907523 Hubster Sharilyn has sent us this wonderful “Taping ReporT” which covers ‘The Toss’ from the the July 17, 2006 taping of “The Daily Show”.

Jon introduced what would be the first of the Daily Show’s “10 F#@king Years” montages, this one being on the theme of “Championing the Lil’ Guy.” They dimmed the lights in the studio, presumably to force us to watch the monitors, but it didn’t work on me. I was still able to watch Jon the entire time, laughing whenever we did. When they showed an extended piece of Stephen, the look on Jon’s face … well, I think we’ve all come to know that look over the years. The smirk of pride.

During the pre-toss, Stephen told Jon he hadn’t gotten much sleep the night before, because he was laying awake worrying about his kids. He “worried at the ceiling for two hours,” and was going to take a two-hour nap during the show to make up for it. Jon asked what the specific issue was, but Stephen didn’t want to say. Jon suggested he have the kids do the show for him, and they bantered a bit longer. At one point, Jon put his feet up on the desk and sat back, as he often did during these pre-tosses.

As for the toss itself? Stephen got partway through it, and he broke. Jon laughed his ass off, collapsing on the desk and tearing his script in half.

“I’m telling you, I got NO sleep last night!,” Stephen said, laughing at himself too.

Jon pressed him again about what was bothering him. Stephen caved and shared a bit about what one of his kids was going through. Even though it was forever ago, and minor in the grand scheme of things (and definitely resolved), he clearly did want keep it private. So I’ll just say that those kids are obviously loved very deeply.

They shot the toss a second time, and Stephen changed up a few of his lines on the fly. The end result: The Toss – Kill the Poor
