Welcome to Tuesday’s Episode Guide, Hubsters! Stephen covered Day 2 of the Democratic National Convention in The City of Brotherly Love. These live shows have been exhilarating. Stephen is the king!
Stephen Colbert Goes Back to the ’90s
With the help of an empty Zima bottle and a shock from a lamp, Stephen traveled back in time to the 1990s. Ah, the 90s! Bill Clinton was president, I was in my teenage years, and all seemed right in the world. If I only knew what was to come! I have digressed. So, Stephen returned to the 90s to ask his former self for Clinton jokes. 90s Stephen was decked out in the quintessential outfit of the decade – a flannel shirt, winter hat, shorts, and big chunky boots. He sung ”Jeremy” by Pearl Jam while he played Mario on his new Gameboy. I loved the posters on the wall – “Clueless,” “Saved By the Bell,” Van Halen, and MC Hammer! 90s Stephen could not understand why 2016 Stephen would possibly need Clinton jokes. Luckily, 90s Stephen had a fresh joke that works perfectly 20 years later:
- How are Clinton scandals like Pokemon? You’ll never catch ’em all!
Monologue
Stephen celebrated the fact that Hillary Clinton was the first woman nominated by a major political party. YES! Stephen “shattered the glass ceiling” in the Ed Sullivan Theater in honor of Hillary.
- This means Hillary Clinton could be the first female president. And America will finally catch up with 1960s Sri Lanka.
- Hillary has still got work ahead of her to get everyone excited, but luckily they’re in Philadelphia: home of professional crowd exciter, the Phillie Phanatic.
You might have to be from Philly to understand how much we love the Phanatic! It’s an unexplainable phenomenon, but Philadelphians can’t get enough of that green goofball! Unfortunately, the Phanatic wasn’t available for “The Late Show,” so Stephen brought in the next best thing – the Hilly Phanatic!
Sadly, the Hilly Phanatic wasn’t really pumped about Hillary.
Stephen talked with Senator Cory Booker via satellite from Philadelphia.
- Last night Cory Booker gave a great speech about how we must love each other and he was repeatedly heckled by the crowd. Yes, the crowd booed a speech about love. Don’t they remember what Jesus said?
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall — Ow! Who threw that rock?! I’m telling my dad!” – Matthew 5:9
Senator Booker said he wasn’t even aware of the booing and the speech was one of the best moments of his professional career.
Booker: It’s a major breakthrough that she [Clinton] has this sense that she is on the verge of becoming actually the next president of the United States. And so I think it is something that’s big. I think there are gonna be kids that are growing up that are gonna be like 16 years old and they’re gonna think to themselves – when the next time a white guy is elected to the presidency – they’re gonna think to themselves, “Wait a minute! I thought that only women and black guys could do that job.”
Colbert: I think it’s particularly significant – I think it’s a real breakthrough – that two men can talk about how significant this is for women right now. I think we’ve come a long way.
Cartoon Hillary Clinton
Over at the desk, Stephen further discussed Hillary’s nomination.
- A hundred years from now our grandchildren will look back on this day and say, “Why weren’t you more excited?!”
I agree with that statement. Many people – including our late night hosts – poke fun at the fact that Hillary isn’t that exciting. I laugh at those jokes, of course! But in all seriousness, the fact that Hillary Clinton might be the first female president of the United States is pretty damn exciting. I have always hoped for a day when a capable, strong woman would be president. That day is possibly here. (Fingers crossed!) Women and little girls from the next generation should be very excited! And now, the first ever appearance by Cartoon Hillary Clinton.
That’s what I love about America, Stephen! It’s the only place where a Secretary of State, Senator, and lifelong public servant can be put on equal footing with a screaming cantaloupe.
Interview – Jeff Daniels
Stephen called Jeff Daniels up from the Jeff Delegation in the audience. I had noticed the Jeff Delegation before and now I realized it’s purpose! After discussing Daniels’ upcoming role in a Western and his horseback riding lessons, they delved into politics.
Daniels: 2004 I watched it [the RNC] and I was so stressed out I went and got a stress test. I got an EKG. And they go, “What brought this [on]?” And I said, “I watched the entire Republican Convention.”
Colbert: What did they prescribe?
Daniels: A month in The Bahamas and just like rest and don’t watch anything Republican anymore. That was back when they were sane. Remember, these are the guys that with a straight face gave you Sarah Palin!
Interview – Bassem Youssef
I have been a fan of Bassem for years now after being introduced to him by the master of satire – Jon Stewart. Bassem is a brilliant satirist who used to be a cardiac surgeon. It’s safe to say that he is one intelligent man. (He also has gorgeous blue eyes!)
Colbert: Now, I first met you through our mutual friend Jon Stewart. [The crowd goes wild!] I’m not the first to say that people have sort of called you the Jon Stewart of Egypt. But now you’re not in Egypt anymore. You’re here. Did you come here to also open an animal rescue farm like Jon did?
Youssef: That was the plan until I saw your elections and so I was like, “Yeah, I’m back in business, baby! Yes!”
Aurora – “I Went Too Far”
Aww, @AuroraMusic didn’t know it was @StephenAtHome cheering her up this whole time. #HermanCainSlowSmile #outtakeshttps://t.co/Rg1WI82xkq
— The Late Show (@colbertlateshow) July 27, 2016
Norwegian singer Aurora wrapped up this show with a performance of “I Went Too Far” from her album “All My Demons Greeting Me As A Friend.” Her voice is very reminiscent of the Icelandic singer Björk, who hit the music scene in the 90s.
That does it for this show and this Episode Guide. Make sure to stayed tuned to “The Late Show” all week as Stephen brings you more live coverage of the DNC.
