June 10th, 2013: The Taping ReporT!

Hubster Mrs. Spock has sent us this wonderful “Taping ReporT” of her trip to the June 10th, 2013 taping of “The Colbert Report”.

Here is the Q&A portion of the Dan Savage taping:

My friend asked what ideas Stephen had had that were unproduceable. He said he though Iraq would be, but it worked out, then said that he wanted to do a show from the South Pole and not acknowledge it at all. Like, just do the show from there and say nothing about the South Pole at all.

Someone asked a very in-depth Tolkien question I can’t remember the details of, but I think the short answer is that he would like to have dinner with Gandalf.

Someone asked about his picture of Hugh Laurie. He explained about how there was a framed picture of Colbert on House’s desk, and he was thrilled, so they reciprocated. He said he loves Hugh Laurie and would like to have him on the show sometime.

In the interview, they cut out an incredibly raw and sincere moment when Dan Savage was talking about how his mother suffered in the last 90 minutes of her life, and suddenly Stephen leaned forward, put his hand on Dan’s arm, and said “I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry that happened to you.” It was too real for the audience to even “aw” or anything…it was just silent. There was a pause and they moved on. We knew it would be cut.

Finally, I got to ask the last question after the taping, but I don’t understand his answer! I asked if it’s easier to write a segment about a news story that is horribly tragic or one that is inherently funny. He said “I think you’ve answered your own question!” My friend and I didn’t get it. So I’m curious! Maybe I’ll ask him again someday.
