“Love gives us courage to act. Love gives us hope that change is possible. Love allows us to change the script. So love your country, love your family, love the families and the victims and the people of Orlando, but let’s remember that love is a verb. And to love means to do something.”

I’ve been so consumed this summer so far with my family and kids, you almost forget that life is happening outside of you. I was so busy, in fact, this weekend, that I could not even keep up with the news headlines as I normally do in my true news-junkie fashion. I had read early Sunday morning that there was ANOTHER horrible mass shooting, and that there were about 20 casualties.

Later that day my family and I went to a Mexican restaurant and sat around the table, tired out from our activities. I saw CNN blaring in the background. I decided to pull out my phone and check in on the story. “50 dead,” screamed the headline.

My face fell, and a tear came to my eye. 50 dead? How is that even possible? How. How. How.

I also knew that, as usual, Stephen would have to address the tragedy on his show, as he has done countless times. While he always has something beautiful and touching to say, last night’s brief remarks were particularly heart rending. His comments seemed more subdued this time, yet ever more passionate. “To love means to do something.” Yes, yes, we must.

The show wasn’t entirely dedicated to tragedy. Later on, Stephen lightly teased Hamilton for not winning the 12th Tony it was nominated for in set design. He also paid homage to Steph Curry’s new Under Armour granny sneakers.

Let us know what you thought of the show in the comments.

It’s as if there is a national script we’ve learned. And I think by accepting the script we tacitly accept that the script will end the same way every time. With nothing changing.

Except for the loved ones and the families of the victims, for whom nothing will ever be the same. It’s easy — almost tempting — to be paralyzed by such a monstrously hateful act. To despair and say, “well, that’s the way the world is now.”

Well, I don’t know what to do but I do know that despair is a victory for hate. Hate wants us to be too weak to change anything. These people in Orlando were apparently targeted because of who they love and there have been outpourings of love throughout the country and around the world. Love in response to hate.

Love does not despair. Love makes us strong. Love gives us hope that change is possible. Love allows us to change the script. So love your country, love your family, love the families and the victims and the people of Orlando, but let’s remember that love is a verb. And to love means to do something.

Stephen then transitions right into the interview with Bill O’Reilly without any show intro or walk on music. It turns into a spirited debate, with Stephen frequently challenging Papa Bear (and subsequently holding his head in his hands.) Lots of head-desking, understandably. It’s O’Reilly, after all.

Bill O’Reilly: [Trump] wants to be president. He’s using this terrorism issue to bolster his popularity.
Stephen: So he’s making a political tool out of a terror attack.
O’Reilly: That’s what he’s doing.

After the interview, it was time to lighten the mood. Stephen talks up Hamilton’s sweeping of the Tonys, and Draymond Green’s mini-suspension for his Lebron nut-kicking during the NBA finals. He then introduces a new trash-talking segment where he spouts off one-liners ribbing the much-maligned Curry 2s:

Colbert trash talks the new Curry 2’s in his segment “Stephen Takes the Gloves Off.”

  • Damn Steph Curry these shoes look like they’re putting themselves through nursing school!
  • No for real, these shoes are going to look great next season so long as the Warriors uniforms become khakis and a Baby Bjorn.
  • Steph do you wear these shoes to play for Golden State or The Golden Girls?
  • All joking aside Steph, I can’t wait to wear these kicks. How much do I have to donate to NPR’s pledge drive to get them as a gift?

Next, onto the lovely (and very pregnant) Anna Chlumsky. She discusses her role on Veep, pregnancy superstitions, and her experience of being a military spouse. Her husband served in Afghanistan for a time, I thought it was an interesting topic.

Stephen: What’s [having the experience of being a military spouse/family] been like for you…what do you think people should know about it that they don’t know?
Anna: I’m certain we don’t have enough time, but I think that it definitely taught us that being a support system for a soldier…or a serviceman/woman it takes just as much courage and perserverance and patience as one would think it takes the actual person serving. It includes everybody.
