Samuel L. Jackson joins Stephen for the realest edition of “Big Questions with Even Bigger Stars.”
Stephen made headlines for taking a pretty strong stand in this episode on the media’s coverage of the Istanbul airport attacks, a deadly terrorist act that killed 45 innocent people, mostly Turkish airport workers and travelers. Personally, my family and I have traveled through this airport many times, as it is an important hub to Middle East and Far East destinations from the West. It is a blow to the sense that perhaps Turkey was still a safe place to pass through going to various places throughout the world. After the Brexit, globalization ostensibly took another hit this week.
Colbert primarily was outraged about the media replaying the footage of a suicide bomber detonating himself over and over again, saying:
Is it really necessary to show us photographs or rolling video of a terrorist exploding? That really seems like advertising for someone’s cause in a way that they may like. I don’t think we need to see that.
Stephen is the kind of broadcaster who thinks very carefully about what he puts on the air, as evidenced by the tightness of his scripts, the economy of this words and the precision of his delivery. I don’t think that showing a terrorist’s moment of death necessarily is a bad thing, as the world needs to understand the gravity of what is transpiring all across the world. However, given his sincere dedication in staying “humane” in delivering his comedy and also as being a commentator, I think I can understand where Stephen is coming from. Let’s not glorify these moments of suffering. Nevertheless, the Islamic State is a powerful force, and more tragedy is still yet to unfold.
