Stephen has been checked-out of the news cycle over break, so Dr. Opus is on hand to give him the tortuous full upload.

So great to have Stephen back looking nice and rested from Memorial Day break! He looks great! The audience’s energy is also electric in this fine return-to-shows episode. After running through some headlines in the monologue, Stephen pays tribute to Muhammad Ali with old friend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Then, Stephen’s late night CBS cohort James Corden spends a two segment interview talking up Tonys and Carpool Karaoke.

We will have lots more to come, but let us know how you felt about the show coming back!

Stephen features a beautiful tribute to Muhammad Ali, and this quote elicits a strong response from the audience:

Later, old friend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar appears via satellite to discuss Ali’s life and legacy:

Stephen: Is there anything that people don’t know about your friend that they should be thinking about right now?

Kareem: His understanding of what integrity was all about was remarkable, and it’s an example to repeat for our kids and grandkids. He was the real deal.

Next up, James Corden is on hand. The interview starts out pretty ordinarily, but towards the end, James becomes philosophical about being a “global citizen,” and has some touching things to say. I will transcribe his comments shortly.

Stephen teases Corden about all of his Lin-Manuel Miranda name-dropping. Later, Corden talks about feeling neither British nor American, but rather a citizen of the world.

Stephen: Is Los Angeles feeling like home, or do you miss London a lot?

James: I miss London, I very much miss being at home […] but in terms of feeling…people have said to me “how does it feel being a Brit in America?” and all, the truth is…I’ve never really considered myself to be anything than a citizen of the world, really, and I don’t really think of myself as being British or American. I sort of feel like we’re all in it together.

After an appearance by Scott Speedman and a great performance by Death Cab for Cutie, James appears once again to plug his show and both hosts exit the stage through the audience. At the very end of the show we see a “In Memoriam” dedication for LSSC sound engineer Mark Hutchins, who passed away suddenly over the holiday break. We are very sorry to hear of his passing, and send our condolences to his family, friends, and to LSSC staff. There is a crowdfunding page available for his funeral costs.
