First, I’d like to thank Sophia McClennen and Remy Maisel for taking the time to answer questions for us at The Hub. Their new book, ‘Is Satire Saving Our Nation: Mockery and American Politics?‘, argues that political satire is more than just fun: it’s a way of becoming an engaged and informed citizen — especially for Millennials. Obviously, both The Colbert Report and The Daily Show play a large role in McClennen/Maisel’s argument!
As a person who has always believed in the power of comedy to reach people, this is an argument I can fully endorse.

On October 30th, I went to my final taping of The Colbert Report—a truly bittersweet occasion, as you can imagine. I’d thought about holding off till nearer the end, and wavered about going, but finally I decided I just wanted to make sure I got one more taping in and grabbed the ticket. I did not want to be frozen out!

BUMP — STEPHEN WON AMAZON!
We faithful members of the Colbert Nation know that a few weeks ago, Stephen Colbert declared all-out war on Amazon after the powerful mega-store demanded better financial terms from the publisher Hachette. When the publisher refused, Amazon threw a tantrum and retaliated by removing all the “buy” and “presale” buttons from Hachette’s books. Unfortunately for them, Hachette (or, rather, Grand Central, which is part of Hachette) is Stephen’s publisher. Jon Stewart’s, too, by the way. That meant Stephen’s books couldn’t be purchased. And that made Stephen raging MAD.

Hello Hubsters,
“Now’s the time to say goodbye . . . Good night. Good night.”
Yes, today is my final BKAG, at least for the time being. I’ll still stick around to comment and support, and also continue to do some “special reporting” when something Stephen-related happens in New York City. I’m sad, but I know that right now it is the best thing for me.
Mr. Colbert has been smokin’ for the past few weeks, really making the most of the madness out there in Congress, in the media, and in our society. We’ve been blessed with several WORDS, which I’ve enjoyed immensely, as well as some fantastic guests. I expect the fabulousness to continue as we move into February.
And so, without more ado: to the days ahead! One note: though I wanted to make this a good final post, I will not be doing Jon’s guests. I was nearly done, went to leave the page after having saved the drafts SEVERAL TIMES, and lost everything on Stephen’s Thursday show as well as all I’d done on The Daily Show. I simply don’t have the heart or the time to recreate it all. I’m so sorry. Talk about going out with a whimper….

Hello, Hubsters!
I hope everyone had a lovely weekend. As for me, I’m winding down here: this is my next-to-last post. And I’m thrilled that Stephen has a really wide variety of guests this week for me to cover: one activist with his own unique take on environmental destruction; one multi-billionaire who’s doing good in the world; a much-praised short story writer; and a musician and music critic who examined one of the most popular symphonies in the classical canon. It’s a pretty rich list.
I thought last week had some superb pieces, both the WORD and also Stephen’s scathing commentary on the gerrymandering by the Virginia State Legislature. It’s truly appalling that this still happens in this day and age. Also kudos to one of Larry Wilmore’s all-too-rare appearances on The Daily Show; he was stunningly brilliant and reminded me why I love his work so much. I’ve been so thrilled with both Jon and Stephen in their 2013 shows; they’re fired up and ready to go, and I feel such energy from them both. It’s wonderful, and very necessary in this world we live in.

Happy Martin Luther King Day! Let’s celebrate a dream of peace and equality, when people will be judged not by the color of their skin but the content of their character.
Here’s hoping we have a show Monday and that it’s not cancelled because of a sick Stephen. (Obviously my concern is the host, not the show.) If he’s well enough to tape, what might he cover? Of course, there’s his sister’s announced run for the House. He must give her the Colbert bump! As a Democrat in a Republican county, she’s going to need all the help she can get. Best of luck to Elizabeth Colbert-Busch, and here’s hoping she wins. South Carolina could only be the better for having a Colbert in the House.
And following The Colbert Report’s presentation of “Breaking Downton,” should come: “Breaking Vatican.” You see, a Monsignor from Connecticut has been caught selling meth and laundering money. And that’s not all. Cross-dressing! A sex shop! Read all about it! It’s definitely Colbert territory. I mean, the Monsignor even likes show tunes.
Of course, we can’t forget the Inauguration, the deadly results on “gun appreciation day,” and well . . . lots more. It should be a good week—if our fearless and determined host can make it through.
