Mr. Colbert Over Long Island
Hey Hubsters! I hope you are all doing well this Break Week. Some of you may have had the opportunity to check out the amazing footage from the Heroes over at Makerbot, who recently sent our glorious and fearless friend Stephen’s shrunken head into space!
You may recall that CEO and co-founder of Makerbot Bre Pettis visited the Report early in June, and introduced the Nation to concept of Makerbot, which is essentially a small-scale plastic injection molding machine that you can customize to digitally create, well, virtually anything of the smaller variety into an object of lego-like texture. Wisely, they chose to pattern Stephen’s head, lit up in a bedazzling smile:
Later, in July, Matt from Makerbot explains, “Not content to confine ourselves to mashups, [Bre Pettis and his Makerbot colleagues] initiated the MakerBot Space Program with a mission to send a bust of Stephen Colbert into space on a weather balloon with a Flipcam and a GPS enabled cell phone.”
Basically, if one is in possession of a weather balloon, a little scientific know-how, a camera and cell phone, and some therma-care wraps, one can send stuff into space. Here is a picture of the Makerbot folks getting ready to launch mini-Stephen:
And the mesmerizing 1 hour 24 minutes of footage. I particularly like the delighted squeals from the kids playing in the baseball diamond as the balloon lifted off, to the turbulent winds that engulfed at the mid-level of altitudes, to finally, at about 34 minutes in, the quiet serenity of the outermost reaches of the atmosphere. Someone needs to make this footage into a screen saver or something.
Apparently, Stephen went as far as 25 miles up, eventually falling back down to earth and into suburban Connecticut (and Team Makerbot recovered him!)
