'Satirical Media Discourse and Audience Engagement' Study

Hubster and socio-linguist Catherine is currently working on a discourse analysis of ‘The Word – Truthiness’ segment from the very first episode of ‘The Colbert Report’. As a linguist, Catherine is interested in analysing complex media messages such as those communicated in ‘The Colbert Report’, and how these messages affect the shows audience. However, the real-world effects of these linguistic messages are difficult to determine, and that is where she needs your help.

Dear Colbert Report Fans,

Help needed for interpretations of the comments in “The Word – Truthiness” segment.

I am an academic who is analyzing the linguistic techniques used on The Colbert Report and I have a particular interest in how the satirical discourse creates audience engagement. I have some questions for Colbert’s fans from all over the world. To participate please watch the segment and respond to the following questions:

What is this comment responding to in what Colbert has just said? How do you interpret this comment? Is the comment addressed to you as the audience or to Colbert or both? If it’s amusing to you, please explain why. Can you describe the person who is making the comment? Does it seem to be the person who made the last comment or somebody different? If different, how? (These last two questions would obviously apply only with the second comment).
