Shock and Awe: Sean Spicer's Surprise Cameo at the Emmy's

The most jaw-dropping moment of this years Primetime Emmy Award’s, was of course when Trump’s former Spokes-piñata Sean Spicer took to the Emmy stage during Stephen Colbert’s opening monologue, to give his own less-than-truthful account of this year’s Emmy Award’s audience size:

Mr. Spicer made his Emmys appearance at the end of Mr. Colbert’s opening monologue, which included a long riff about Mr. Trump’s uneasy relationship with the entertainment industry and his apparent frustration that his NBC reality series “The Apprentice” never won an Emmy Award.

Mr. Colbert, a frequent critic of both Mr. Trump and Mr. Spicer, went on to say that the president was primarily concerned with TV ratings, but that there was no way to know how large his audience was.

Mr. Colbert asked, “Sean, do you know?”

At that point, Mr. Spicer shot out of the wings — pushing a podium similar to the one immortalized by Melissa McCarthy in her impersonation of him on “Saturday Night Live.”

He recited his briefing room statement, nearly word for word. “This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys, period — both in person and around the world,” he declared with a semi-straight face.

Laughter and applause could be heard throughout the Microsoft Theater, and celebrities in the audience were seen on the telecast, reacting with their mouths agape.

Interestingly, Stephen Colbert’s executive producer Chris Licht, who happened to have a connection to Spicer from his years as producer at CBS This Morning, was able to arrange Spicer’s cameo. It turned out to be a brilliant and memorable moment for the Emmy’s broadcast.

“Sh*t, this is like a f*cking press conference,” former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer joked last night to a group of Deadline staffers after his cameo to kick off the Primetime Emmy Awards. “It’s been a crazy night,” he said at Netflix’s post-Emmys bash.

Taking it all in stride — and making more public appearances by the day, with a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live scoring big ratings — Spicer said he simply responded to an idea that was put to him last Thursday by Colbert and his team. “Stephen Colbert and his executive producer reached out, and they had a really interesting idea for his monologue tonight,” Spicer said. “I thought it was interesting, and we went from there.”

Overall, I’m pretty impressed that Colbert and his team were able to keep Sean’s cameo a surprise up until the very moment he rolled his podium onto stage. It was a great bit too, because it reminded me of how Stephen can always find a way to shock you a little — there’s no such thing as complacency in Colbert-world.
