In further cover story feature news, TIME Magazine recently had the privilege of photographing and discussing with Stephen Colbert his actual identity as himself, no-[character]-holds-barred.
“If anyone can put the edge back in late night, it’s him.”
But, as most people are still wondering, who exactly is he? So many of us are accustomed to his blowhard, ultra-alter-ego, Stephen Colbert character; and even for long time fans of his other notable works over the years, there’s somewhat still a level of curiosity to his true identity, as a character persona of some form always followed suit throughout his previous work.
In the September cover feature article entitled ‘ Stephen Colbert’s Night Vision‘, we learn a little more about an idea for a recurring segment on the upcoming Late Show that will focus on Colbert from the beginning of his childhood to his present status. The segment is to be entitled ‘Who Am Me’. This involved work from staffers, traveling across the country, as well as back to his hometown in Charleston, SC, where he even discusses finding and meeting up with an elementary school teacher whom he used to have a crush on. Can we say adorable?!
Who he’s most excited to talk to for “Who Am Me?”:
My elementary school teacher, my favorite teacher from elementary school, is just so excited. I had such a crush on her. I’m going to talk to her. I haven’t seen her since 1974 but I can’t believe that they found her. She moved away when I was 10 and then she came back just recently, so they found her down in Charleston.
TIME delves further into the unknown in order to learn more about the “common” man, as he explains himself to be …
I feel very lucky that I got this kind of gig as old as I was. I was 41 before anybody stopped me on the street, so I hope I had a sense of who I was. I was married; I had all my kids; I had my house; my little suburban lifestyle with my Volvo and my khakis going to the dry cleaners on a Saturday. That’s me. I’m boring—not boring—I’m common. I don’t mean that pejoratively. I’m very common. I happen to have this job that very few people have but I’m very happy that I like khakis and an oxford cloth shirt. I like being boring to a certain extent. I don’t have to be flashy. I get to put all of that into a show and when it’s over I don’t have to be that.

There has been so much media coverage lately regarding Stephen and the release of the new Late Show. The anticipation is high and we are all ready to see Stephen on stage, this time in his own skin, that is.
