Here’s something great for your Friday appointment listening, Hubsters! Slate’s David Plotz’s new podcast series “Working” explores the workdays of various kinds of folks. He sagely chose Slate-thusiast Stephen Colbert for his first episode. It’s fantastic to listen to Stephen run down through the entire day from start to finish, and it’s the longest you’ll ever hear Stephen speaking without interruption. Enjoy, and let’s discuss further after the jump.
Isn’t it interesting that now of all times we are getting this podcast? Seeing as the show is going away soon, it is truly fascinating to hear Stephen’s frenzied, breathless narration of how everything comes together on a daily basis. Wow, it sounds really mentally draining. As a fan, it makes me appreciate the effort being made by Stephen and all the staff all the more. And I definitely would much rather be on the receiving end of the labor than the production side.
A couple of things stood out to me here. First off, it seems like the hardest part of the day is when Stephen has to make that hairpin turn from writer/producer to performer. I totally get why he seems to “huff” the audience’s energy – he probably needs that to make the transition really happen. Also, how truly collaborative the work at TCR is. Stephen talks about the writing process, reshaping it again and again with the producers, and then shaking the hands or otherwise physically touching the tech people before he goes out to do the show. It appears that acknowledging and engaging everyone on the production staff throughout the day is important to him, integral to making the show work.
Because The Late Show will be so different than The Colbert Report in terms of well, everything, I can’t imagine the day in the new show resembling this one very much, except for the collaborative-ness that has been TCR’s winning formula. I simply hope that Bic opens a small production line and makes as many chewy-pens as Mr. Colbert wants.
