Steve Carell

‘The Hollywood Reporter‘ is releasing a special ‘Saturday Night Live’ themed magazine edition ahead of the shows 40th Anniversary Special which is set to air on February 15th, 2015. The magazine features a reflective interview with the show’s creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels, in which he talks about some of the major performers who auditioned for the show but were turned down.

Even the best guts in the business can miss. Whom did you overlook that you kicked yourself over later?

Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell auditioned. There were lots of people who you’d see how brilliant they were, but you knew on some level that it wasn’t going to work. Lisa Kudrow gave a brilliant audition, but it was at the time when it was Jan Hooks and Nora [Dunn]. I wasn’t at the Jim Carrey audition, but somebody who was there said, “I don’t think Lorne would like it,” and they were probably wrong, but it doesn’t matter. Or maybe they were right — who knows? No one gets it all right.

What do you think Hubsters. Would you have liked to have seen Stephen Colbert as a ‘Saturday Night Live’ cast member? Do you think he would make a good guest host? Or are you struggling to comprehend what life would be like if ‘The Colbert Report’ did not exist?

graphic-a-look-back-8725173The fine folks at Second City have decided to help soothe us from Colbert withdrawal by releasing footage of Stephen’s last night at the theatre on May 22, 1994. Introduced by Steve Carell, who effusively praised Stephen’s work and said “I think he’s put up some of the best scenes done here…he’s an exceptional improvisor with an exceptional reference level.” (“And he has funny ears!” yelled Amy Sedaris, helpfully, from off-stage.) Stephen, joined by Paul Dinello on guitar, and other notable troupe members such as Mitch Rouse and David Razowksy were on hand to perform songs from various revues during Stephen’s tenure.

I really want to hear the whole “Fish Tank” song. They put a lot of feeling into that one. After the jump there is another great SC video for us to “look back” on.

bkag-5365311 Welcome to Better Know a Guest, your weekly guide to the wonderful and diverse array of personalities appearing on ‘The Colbert Report’ and ‘The Daily Show’ each week.

Hello, Colbert News Hub! This is set to be a very entertaining week of shows. As news goes here in America, we are finally getting over the midterms and it has been a surprisingly quiet week. My favorite bits of news this week have been science news – the Food and Drug administration has approved the first genetically modified potato for public consumption, and researchers in North Carolina have attached electronic backpacks to roaches to control their movements so that they can find people calling for help after natural disasters.

Stephen’s guests this week are a talk show host, a fashion designer, a mathematician, and an actress. Jon’s are a musician, an illustrator, a UN ambassador, two actors, and a journalist. Let us know who you’re excited to hear from this week, and what stories you hope to see covered!
