In the second episode of ‘The Late Show Podcast‘, Stephen Colbert is accompanied by Paul Dinello and Matt Lapin, both writers and supervising producers.
Stephen asked Paul, or as he calls him, “Goofy,” to talk about how they first met. Paul explained they met during the National Tour audition for Second City. They both ended up working for the Tour and travelled around together in a 16-passenger van from one small city to the next.
Matt met Stephen in 1997, where he was hired as a writer’s assistant for the Strangers with Candy pilot. Matt was so excited to be working on a show like this, as he explained, “I found my people.”
Stephen explained how they “worked hard and stupid.” They were so tired, they would rewrite scenes, forgetting they were just filmed-even if they were in it. Stephen also spoke about not wanting to write “that ugly” anymore. For them, if it made them laugh, they would keep it in, unless the network decided to remove it.
Stephen and Paul reminisced working on Exit 57, where they would hit Beta and VHS tapes with bats, shattering them to pieces. And while at VH1, while they were supposed to be writing, were instead fencing with each other.
Currently, they are working on ideas and a fun story they enjoyed exploring is Goggle Porn, a law they want passed in California, requiring people in the porn industry to wear goggles … for safety purposes.
Stephen ends the podcast by stating he is leaving for New Orleans to meet up with John Batiste, his new bandleader.
