Stephen Colbert has conquered television, literature, the web, space, presidential politics, and so on, but the burning question remains: is he the voice of your GPS? To help promote the Late Show, navigation app Waze now offers our fearless host’s Boring Baritone as a voice option for its GPS guidance.
Download the app, select Stephen as your voice guidance option, and in no time, Colbert is riding shotgun (and calling the shots.) We here at the Hub got excited over this app, as you can imagine. After the jump, I have my own user review.
After hurriedly downloading Waze on my phone, I decided to let Stephen take me home. It seems like he prerecorded a few directions, “turn right!” and “turn left!” He will also basically tell you to turn in a half mile or “0.1 miles.” Those are the only distances he is primarily concerned with, no quarter mile, or 3/4th of a mile. You’re on your own for those. When he says, “and then,” he does so in his dramatic voiceover voice, which will make you laugh out loud.
Nevertheless, his directions are effective. I was sure that he might not have recorded to turn in a roundabout, which my ride home has, but no, he did tell me to go straight after the roundabout! I was impressed by that.
The only thing I didn’t like as a fangirl is while I was receiving the GPS directions, a prompt came up asking me if I wanted to change the voice guidance to KFC’s Colonel Sanders. Um, hello? I picked handsome and charming funnyman Stephen Colbert, not a goateed old man with questionable neckwear preferences.
In summary, having Stephen as GPS was an unexpected delight. I never thought I would giggle while being told to turn right. Thanks to Waze and the Late Show for making it happen, it’s a great promotional idea for the show. I imagine for any performer it’s cool to try different things, and everybody has had experience with GPS. I hope they keep Stephen on as a permanent option! If you don’t mind, I am going to take Stephen with me to get sushi.
