Better Know a Guest: August 25 – 28, 2014

Welcome to Better Know a Guest, your weekly guide to the wonderful and diverse array of personalities appearing on ‘The Colbert Report’ and ‘The Daily Show’ each week.

Hey there Hubsters! Hopefully you all enjoyed the two-week break from the show and post-Emmy triumph (for me, it means moving back into college for senior year!) It definitely looks like the hosts will have a lot to talk about this first week back.  I suspect we’ll be hearing more about Israel and Gaza, the incidents surrounding the death of Michael Brown and the unrest in Ferguson, the execution of James Foley by ISIS, and continuing drama in the Crimean Peninsula.  Of course, if there’s anything you’d like to see addressed on the show, what guests you’re most excited to hear from this week, and more, let us know in the comments below!

Stephen’s guests this week include two actors, an author, and an artist. Jon’s guests this week include an author and a comedian. Let’s get this short Emmy week started!

Jeff Bridges, Lois Lowry (Actor, Author, “The Giver”)

Jeff Bridges is an American actor, country singer, and producer, and Lois Lowry is an American writer and children’s author. Jeff Bridges is starring in the new film adaptation of Lois Lowry’s The Giver as the eponymous character, a mysterious figure in a dystopian society that has enforced the Sameness protocol on its members. The Sameness protocol aims to rid the people of pain and strife, but also removes their emotional depth. Jonas, a twelve year-old boy who is about to be assigned his job within the community, finds out that he has been chosen for a very special position known as “The Receiver of Memory”. The Receiver stores all the memories of the people before the Sameness protocol was imposed and is expected to advise the Elders, who might lack the experience to make important decisions. As Jonas begins the process of receiving memories, he learns the truth about his society and struggles with the knowledge he has been given. The cast includes Meryl Streep as the Chief Elder, Brenton Thwaites as Jonas, Alexander Skarsgard as Jonas’s father, Odeya Rush as Fiona, Katie Holmes as Jonas’s mother, Taylor Swift as the Giver’s daughter, Rosemary, and Cameron Monaghan as Asher.

David Rose (Author: “Enchanted Objects“)

David Rose is an American entrepreneur, author, and instructor at the MIT Media Lab. His first book, Enchanted Objects, examines the ways that everyday objects could soon be designed to predict our needs. Rose believes that the world is on the edge of an age where objects as mundane as wallets, watches, umbrellas, and trash cans can learn our needs and respond to them; he calls these items “enchanted objects” and believes that they have the potential to enhance our lives. Critics have praised Rose’s vision of the future as an exciting one, noting that “David Rose’s vision for enchanted objects and their platforms is spot on. With this book, he offers innovators and businesses a guide for success in this space” (Glenn Lurie, President, Emerging Enterprises and Partnerships, AT&T Mobility).

Todd Glass (Author: “The Todd Glass Situation: A Bunch of Lies about My Personal Life and Bunch of True Stories about My 30-Year Career in Stand-Up Comedy“)

Todd Glass is an American stand-up comedian and author. His latest book is The Todd Glass Situation, a memoir which reflects on his life as a gay man in stand-up comedy, from hiding that part of himself in the early days, to finally coming out publicly at age 48. He recounts the tactics he used to hide his secret in his younger days, from fake girlfriends, abstinence, attempts to “cure” himself, and more. However, his mind was changed by a series of suicides among gay teens, convincing him to come out in order to serve as a role model for others struggling with their sexual orientation. The New York Times Books Review gave the book a positive review, noting that “there are plenty of laughs in Glass’s stories of his fast start in comedy … yet his account of his lifelong struggle to be honest about his sexuality is also serious, sad and ultimately triumphant”.
