David Folkenflik is an American reporter.  He is currently a media correspondent for National Public Radio (NPR), and primarily appears on the shows Morning Edition and All Things Considered, with some appearances on Talk of the Nation.  Folkenflik has written for The Herald-Sun in Durham, North Carolina, and The Baltimore Sun in Baltimore, Maryland.  His book, Murdoch’s World, examines the rise and scandals of News Corp, the media empire of news tycoon Rupert Murdoch.

Julius Erving (Author: “Dr. J the Autobiography”)

Julius Erving is a retired American basketball player.  In his career, he won three championships, four Most Valuable Player awards, and three scoring titles under the (now-defunct) American Basketball Association.  He was inducted into the Basketball  Hall of Fame in 1993, and was named one of the 40 most important athletes of all time by Sports Illustrated.  Erving is credited by many for popularizing the “slam dunk” shot over the course of his career, which brought attention to the sport.

Brian Lehrer (Host: “WNYC: The Brian Lehrer Show”)

Brian Lehrer is the host of New York City’s public radio station WNYC and host of the daily program The Brian Lehrer Show. The show features interviews with experts and news makers and focuses on social issues and current events.  Lehrer also hosts the technology-oriented television show BrianLehrer.TV on CUNY TV and has been in broadcast journalism for more than 20 years.  Lehrer’s Op-Ed pieces have appeared in many newspapers like The New York Times, The New York Sun, Newsday, The New York Daily News, and on Slate.com.

Daniel Lieberman (Author: “The Story of the Human Body: Evolution, Health, and Disease”)

Daniel Lieberman is a paleoanthropologist at Harvard University, and is currently the Edwin M. Lerner II Professor of Biological Sciences and chair of the Human Evolutionary Biology Department.  He is well known for his research on the evolution of the human body, especially the evolution of the head.  His book, The Story of the Human Body: Evolution, Health, and Disease, tells the story of human evolution and investigates how technology and other advancements have lead to longer life but more chronic disease.

Bob Woodruff (Bob Woodruff Foundation)

Bob Woodruff is an American television journalist. He is well-known for replacing Peter Jennings as co-anchor for ABC News World News Tonight. Woodruff was wounded by a roadside bomb a month later while reporting on the War in Iraq. Despite suffering a serious brain injury, he returned to the show with the report ”To Iraq and Back: Bob Woodruff Reports.”  He started the Bob Woodruff Foundation to benefit wounded soldiers, veterans, and their families.  The Foundation, in tandem with the New York Comedy Festival, is holding the “Stand Up for Heroes” event in Madison Square Garden on November 6th.

John Goodman (Actor: “Alpha House”)

John Goodman is an American actor, voice artist, and comedian. He is most famous for his role as Dan Conner on the show Roseanne. Goodman began his career in theater and originated the role of Pap Finn in the play Big River. From there, he moved to television and film roles, and remains a familiar celebrity face. Some of his most famous films include The Big LebowskiO Brother, Where Art Thou?, and The Artist. Goodman is a resident of Louisiana, and has been active in post-Katrina fund raising as well as playing many characters who live in Louisiana.  He plays Gil John Briggs in the Amazon series Alpha House, which follows four senators who live in the same house, and featured a cameo appearance by Stephen Colbert.

Monique Brinson Demery (Author: “Finding the Dragon Lady”)

Monique Brinson Demery is an American author. She first visited Vietnam in 1997 as part of a study abroad program with Hobart and William Smith College.  She received a US Department of Education grant to attend the Vietnamese Advanced Summer Institute in Hanoi, and received a Masters degree in East Asia Regional Studies from Harvard University in 2003. Finding the Dragon Lady examines the story of Madame Nhu, who was the de facto First Lady of South Vietnam from 1955 to 1963.  As a student, Demery was able to track down Nhu in Paris and speak with her in person.  Demery’s initial interviews with Madame Nhu in 2005 were the first time Madame Nhu had spoken to Western press in nearly twenty years.

Patrick Stewart (Actor: “Waiting for Godot”)

Patrick Stewart is an English film, television, and stage actor.  Stewart is famous for his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: the Next Generation and as Dr. Charles Xavier in the X-Men series of films.  Having grown up in a home that dealt with domestic abuse, Stewart has done work for the charities Amnesty International, Refuge, and Combat Stress. He will appear on Broadway in Waiting for Godot as Vladimir.
