Better Know a Guest: September 2 – 5, 2013

bkag-3556248 Welcome to Better Know a Guest, your weekly guide to the wonderful and diverse array of personalities appearing on ‘The Colbert Report’ and ‘The Daily Show’ each week.

Hi there Hubsters! After roughly two weeks of reruns, The Colbert Report is back! And just in time to help us all deal with the end of summer (and if you’re me, the beginning of another semester at college). There are only three guests this week, as Monday’s show will be a rerun. Stephen’s admirable opponents at the interview table this week are New York Archbishop Cardinal Timothy Dolan, meteorologist Gary England, and singer-songwriter John Prine.

A lot has happened in the world during the break. Which events do you think, or are hoping the shows will cover upon their return?

Tuesday, September 3 (2013)
Cardinal Timothy Dolan (Archbishop of New York)

Cardinal Timothy Dolan is an American cardinal of the Catholic Church. He is the tenth and most current Archbishop of New York, appointed by Pope Benedict XVI. He also serves as the President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and is the Cardinal Priest of Nostra Signora di Guadalupe a Monte Mario (English: Our Lady of Guadalupe of Mount Mario) in Rome. Cardinal Dolan was famously one of the papabiles — a possible successor — to the Papacy after Pope Benedict XVI resigned due to ill health. However, Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected instead, becoming Pope Francis. Prior to serving in New York, Cardinal Dolan was the Archbishop of Milwaukee from 2002-2009 and an Auxiliary Bishop of St. Louis from 2001-2002.

Gary England (Meterologist: KWTV-DT)

Gary England is an American meteorologist, and the chief meteorologist for Oklahoma City’s CBS affiliate, KWTV-DT. He was the first on-air meteorologist to warn viewers of a possible tornado using commercial Doppler Radar. He has also contributed to the invention of the First Warning map graphics used to communicate ongoing weather developments without interrupting regular programming. Other projects he has worked on include Storm Tracker — a computer program that calculates the arrival time of severe weather — and I-News, which sends weather alerts to a user’s computer. England was featured in a Daily Show segment in 2007 when it aired a clip of Oklahoma senator Steven Inhofe claiming that the Weather Channel uses global warming to scare viewers into watching its programming. The Daily Show promptly aired a commercial from Oklahoma (Inhofe’s state) which depicted a terrifying scenario of a family running from a tornado. The commercial featured England, with the mother telling her child, “It’s OK baby, listen to Gary England, he’s going to tell us what’s going on”. England himself believes that global warming is real, but is skeptical that it is caused entirely by humans. His last show as chief meteorologist will be on August 30th, 2013, and he will become vice president of corporate relations and weather development for Griffin Communications, the parent company of KWTV.

Born: October 3, 1939 (Seiling, Oklahoma, United States)
