Stephen Colbert, with a little help from his youngest son John, is currently moderating “The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies” panel at San Diego Comic Con in his full Laketown costume!!

Stephen Colbert surprised the crowd at Comic-Con by taking the stage in costume to host a panel for Peter Jackson‘s “Hobbit” films. Chris Hardwick had been hosting the panel, but told the crowd he had to give way to something much better.

The crowd quickly turned from disappointed to ecstatic, as Colbert appeared first in video form and then on-stage dressed as a a lake-town spy, the same role he has for his cameo in the film.

“I cant believe I get to do this,” Colbert said in the video, before taking the stage. Colbert is an ardent fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, and introduced the panel by making jokes about his own geekdom and the excess of Jackson’s work.

Casting conundrum for the upcoming animated film Mr. Peabody & Sherman: Who do you find to voice the part of a smug, over-confident parent?

Up steps Stephen Colbert, the man who has personified these qualities as the host of Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report, where his role is to satirize conservative TV political pundits.

“It was typecasting,” says Colbert, 49.

He jokes that he has longed to extend his TV character’s range to film: “I have looked into the mirror and asked, ‘Why won’t someone cast me as a smug, tight-assed know-it-all?’ ”

The Weinstein boys are back at Miramax. Colony Capital principal Tom Barrack Jr and The Weinstein Company co-chairmen Harvey and Bob Weinstein have set an alliance that will exploit the creative properties in the library that the brothers left behind when they exited Disney. The deal will span 20 years and multiple titles for films, TV series and live stage productions. Qatar Holding and Miramax will finance these, with TWC steering development and distributing domestically while Miramax distributes internationally. Qatar Holding and Colony Capital bought the Miramax library in 2010 for around $660 million.

They’ve been successful librarians, but now Colony Capital needs the talent relationships and development expertise of the Weinsteins to become content generators. “Sure, we own the intellectual property in the library, and most of the intellectual properties in development, but we didn’t have the art form. […]

The new venture will get off the ground quickly with sequels to the Best Picture Oscar winner ‘Shakespeare In Love’ and ‘Rounders’, and they will develop series transfers of ‘Good Will Hunting’ and ‘Flirting With Disaster’. They will also shepherd a development library that includes ‘The Alibi’, a comedy scripted by Stephen Colbert about a service that cleans up messes and creates cover stories for cheating spouses, and ‘The Ninth Life Of Louis Drax’, a script that was being developed by the late Anthony Minghella and Sydney Pollack.

Vulture’s Jennifer Vineyard spoke to Tolkien expert and Hobbit screenwriter Philippa Boyens about the new Hobbit film, ‘The Desolation of Smaug’, the sex lives of Middle Earths magical creatures, and taking on Stephen Colbert in Tolkien trivia.

Stephen Colbert has a cameo in this one, too. Where was he?
Ah, did you not spot him? He’s in Lake-town. As Stephen Colbert would, he works for the Master of Lake-town, he works for the politician. He’s one of his spies. So if you keep an eye out for the guy who has a fake eye patch …

When you guys quizzed each other on Tolkien trivia, what answers did you stump him on?
It was at a party at my house, most of the cast was there, and I’m sitting down with a glass of wine. Pete comes up and says, “Oh, Stephen and I had this hilarious idea that you’re going to have a Tolkien-off with Stephen Colbert.” And I had heard how good he was. Somebody said, “Ah, you’ll take him,” and I said, “I don’t think so. I think this is going to be really bad.” And we were probably the only two people in the room who knew if we were getting it right or wrong! [Laughs] Afterward, there was one where I thought, “No, he got that wrong.” And he actually wrote me a very sweet letter afterward, and he said, “I think I got one wrong.”

mv5bmzu0ndy0ndeznv5bml5banbnxkftztgwotixndu1mde-_v1_sx640_sy720_-4852755 For months the Colbert Nation has speculated about Stephen Colberts possible involvement in ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy, after Stephen received an invitation from Peter Jackson to visit the films set in New Zealand.

As the promotional campaign for trilogies second installment, ‘The Desolation of Smaug’ kicks into high gear, IMDB has updated the films listing to included Stephen Colbert, Evelyn McGee, Peter Colbert and John Colbert as ‘Laketown Spies’.

Having not seen the film, I can neither confirm nor deny the casting news, the film isn’t released in Australia until Boxing Day. But for those of you planning on seeing the film in the cinema, keep your eyes peeled during the scenes in Laketown.

Reddit user Boobarella, has this to say about the scene:

“I saw a cut of the film. He’s sitting on a dock in Lake town smoking a pipe if I remember correctly. He’s looking off camera but featured and wearing a mangled wig of long hair. I remember thinking, “they made that guy look like a dirty Colbert.” Turns out…”

Update:

Warner Bros. tells Yahoo Movies, that the Colberts all play “Laketown spies” in the film. The location becomes central to the story about two-thirds of the way through the flick as it is the final destination before the dwarves and Bilbo Baggins head into the Lonely Mountain to displace that evil, treasure-hording dragon Smaug. In the town, which floats on an icy lake, the little folk strike a shaky alliance with Bard the Bowman (Luke Evans) and have to hang out there for a bit.
