Daft Punk

Happy New Year, Hubsters! I hope your New Year’s Eve was just like the ending to ‘When Harry Met Sally.’ Okay, maybe not! We don’t get a Hollywood ending, but if we’re lucky enough, we get something far greater; an evening surrounded by loved ones, drinking some spirits and making a lot of noise at midnight! However you spent your New Year’s Eve/Day, I hope it was wonderful. We have now bid a fond farewell to 2013. In the words of John Lennon: “Another year over and a new one just begun.”

Now that this year has come to an end we find our fearless leader on several “Best of 2013” articles from all around the web. So, raise your champagne glasses, sing “Auld Lang Syne”, blow your noise-makers and enjoy these articles that feature Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, DFA and all of the wonderful things he did in 2013.

In the first of this years ‘Best of’ lists, ‘The Colbert Report’ has been featured in Entertainment Weekly’s ‘Best of 2013 (Behind the Scenes)’. Stephen Colbert talks exclusively to EW about the ‘series of extremely happy accidents’ that led to the ‘Daft Punk’ Dance Video, and one of the years best viral hits.

graphic-taping-report-5234799 On November 7th, 2013, I was one of the lucky members of the audience that got to see Stephen Colbert and the writers of The Colbert Report converse at The Town Hall in NYC. I’ve attended a number of other “conversations” with Stephen, but of course, once is never enough!

There have been a number of very well written articles about the event, namely from Entertainment Weekly and Splitsider. I recommend you read those to get an idea of some of the things that were discussed; both articles are rich with content and quotes. So, enjoy!

However, as great as those articles were, they weren’t able to capture everything that went on. So, that’s what I am here for!! (Contain your excitement, please)!!

Australian television network, Channel 7 has released its first look promo for the upcoming series of ‘Dancing with the Stars’, hosted by Daniel MacPherson and Melanie Brown (Mel B.).

In years gone by, the shows promo has featured the latest batch of ‘celebrity’ dance victims sexily strutting their stuff to the latest chart topping tracks, including 2012’s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ (These Kids Wear Crowns), 2011’s ‘On the Floor’ (Jennifer Lopez), 2009’s ‘The Boy Does Nothing’ (Alesha Dixon) and 2008’s ‘Take Me on the Floor’ (The Veronicas), each featuring dance related lyrics.

But this year, things are a little different … or should I say, they seem very similar to another celebrity infused dance party that went viral last month?

The promo, with the theme ‘It’s Time to Dance’ is set to Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky’ and features the current batch of dance divas showing of their best dance moves in all manner of locations, including the streets of ‘My Kitchen Rules’, the set of ‘Home & Away’ … and a ‘surprise’ appearance on Australia’s version of ‘The X Factor’.

Seem familiar? It should. Last month at StePhest Colbchella ‘013, after watching his career slip away in front of unamused Hyundai executives, the Stephen we love and know announced ‘This is Colbchella goddammit!! And it is time to dance!!’ and proceeded to host star studded dance party to Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky’, featuring the smooth moves of Bryan Cranston, Matt Damon, Hugh Laurie, Jon Stewart, Jeff Bridges, Tek Jansen and Henry Kissinger and a surprise appearance on ‘America’s Got Talent’.

What do you think Hubsters? Freakish coincidence or blatant rip-off?

Here we are careening into Autumn already. It doesn’t seem possible that summer is nearly over, but I checked my calendar and unfortunately, it’s true.

On the plus side, Jon is back!! and what a great opening to his first show back, complete with Stephen in hazmat suit, and lipstick???

In this edition, Daft Punk cancellation fallout, John Oliver’s performance as interim host (going to miss all the different stories and graphics depicting what Jon is up to) and so much more!

The French electro-pop duo made a “surprise” appearance during Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards, weeks after Stephen Colbert spoiled the secret after the group were no-shows on Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report. (Viacom owns both MTV and Comedy Central.)

While there was speculation that the group would take the stage at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center to perform, the duo instead joined “Get Lucky” collaborators Pharrell Williams and Niles Rodgers to present best female video to Taylor Swift.

Instead, the audience was treated to a snippet of the “Lose Yourself to Dance” music video prior to their introduction.

In an interview earlier this month, Colbert spoke openly about the difficulties of nailing down the reclusive group, revealing that he and the writers worked for weeks to find a common ground, which did not end up panning out.

“Ultimately, I would say, I understand that the VMAs have got their own rules, and Daft Punk, that’s a big important thing to have done,” Colbert said during the interview, “but I’m the guy who’s completely screwed here. I don’t have a show tonight.”

VMA’s executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic, told The Hollywood Reporter that ultimately the decision was made by the group and its management not to appear on The Colbert Report.

“We don’t put restrictions on anyone. I just think that we’re talking to them about a moment and then things sort of change,” he said at the time. “I would not describe that as MTV putting restrictions on people — it was up to that artist and their management what they wanted to do.”

graphic-in-the-press-3529554Howard Stern has branched out into TV and is now a judge on the TV show America’s Got Talent. If you don’t listen to his radio show, then you probably don’t know that he has the tendency to complain about anything and everything. Last week on Howard’s Sirius radio show, a caller asked about the “America’s Got Talent” taping with Stephen. In typical Howard fashion, he lamented having to be involved with something outside of the regular AGT show taping, however, he did say some nice things, I assure you.

His beef wasn’t as much with our hero, as it was with the AGT schedule itself and all the extra things that it involves like bits and interviews that aren’t for the actual show, and that they spring on him at the last minute.

As a former avid Howard listener, I can attest to this fact: Stephen got off light. It could’ve been way worse.
