Tonight Stephen gave us a very solid episode. He was wearing a red wristband, reminiscent of his WristStrong band from The Colbert Report, but he didn’t mention what it was. I wish we here at The Hub knew! But it looks like we’re not the only ones wondering. Our blogger, StephenSmiles64’s article, “A Guide To Stephen’s Wrist Bling”, is back in our Top Posts. Inquiring minds want to know! Let’s delve into this episode, shall we?!

Stephen made his grand entrance, instantly making me smile. This man keeps me sane! During the monologue, Stephen discussed the Iowa Caucus.

  • We have reached the happy ending of America’s long and frustrating caucus tease.

Since the show is taped is at 5:30pm, Stephen and the studio audience did not yet know the outcome. Today we know that Ted Cruz won for the Republicans and Hillary Clinton was the victor for the Democrats. I thought Trump would take it for the GOP, but it was Cruz. Ugh. It’s like Lindsey Graham said, “It’s like being shot or poisoned.” I’m sure Stephen will discuss the results tomorrow.

Over at the desk, Stephen blew us a big kiss. Caught it! Stephen started off with his very first trip into the CBS Vault. Tonight, we take a look at The Twilight Zone, but just the most interesting parts – the twist at the end of every episode. Cut to Stephen in black and white holding a cigarette like the host of the The Twilight Zone in the 1960s, Rod Serling.

  • Submitted for your approval. Tales of expectations shattered. Assumptions obliterated. Preconceived notions stuffed into a bag of doubts and tossed into a lake of hunches. All without the 30 minute set-ups.

Several scenes of the Late Show‘s version of The Twilight Zone are shown, with only the twist endings: A man’s dream of going back in time and saving his dog from being hit by a car turns out to have come true. But the dog became Hitler! Next, the last woman on Earth, who loves soup, can now consume all the cans of soup she wants. The only thing is, there are no spoons. Only forks! Then, a ventriloquist is accused of killing a night club owner, but it was his dummy, Knuckles, that made him commit the crime. The police officer checks Knuckle’s pulse and he doesn’t have one. The ventriloquist is now also accused of killing Knuckles and taken away, but Knuckles opens his eyes! That part freaked me out a bit!

Stephen’s first guests are John Travolta and Courtney B. Vance, who star together in People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. They discussed where they were when O.J. Simpson was fleeing in his white Ford Bronco. Vance was watching the NBA finals when is was pre-empted by the chase. Travolta was basking in the glow of Pulp Fiction (I love that movie), but his father kept him updated. Stephen was at a wedding rehearsal dinner and made them turn on the TV. The bride was not happy with him! I know you’re all wondering and dying to know, so I’ll tell you. It was 14 years old and at the movies with my friends. My father picked me up after the movie was over and told me what was happening. We went back home and watched it on TV. Travolta and Vance seemed very friendly with each other. They talked about the pressures of playing real people – Travolta playing Robert Shapiro and Vance playing Johnnie Cochran. “If the glove doesn’t fit, you must acquit.” Stephen showed a clip of Travolta playing Shapiro and it looks like Travolta got it right! I was quite young during the O.J. trial, but I’ll never forget it. You could not escape it. It was constantly on TV and all anybody talked about. It was truly a complete circus. I’m looking forward to watching the series.

Stephen said a line that was almost identical to what he said in the Adweek interview:

  • I’ve gotta a little crush on this show. I think she’s kind of a cute. I hope she likes me back.

Stephen did another segment of “Big Questions With Even Bigger Stars.” This week’s star? Kermit the Frog.

Kermit: Hey Stephen, what is it that makes you you?
Colbert: Oh, I think it’s 12 writers and 2 hours of make-up.

Colbert: Hey Kermit, what’s your biggest regret?
Kermit: Signing up for high school biology class.

Kermit: Hey Stephen do you ever feel like we’re being watched?
Stephen: I certainly hope so.

Stephen’s next guest was Amy Cuddy, a Harvard social psychologist and author, who introduced the world to the “Wonder Woman Pose.” Amy sat down with her arms up on the back of the chair. Total power pose! Stephen had to join in on the power pose, so he put his feet up on the desk and his hands behind his head. They discussed power poses and how they denote confidence. They talked about how when you smile it makes you feel happy. Stephen smiled at Cuddy for awhile.

Cuddy: It can also make you seem creepy.
Colbert: True. That’s the part that makes me happy!

John Moreland made his television debut singing the song “Break My Heart Sweetly.” It was a beautiful acoustic number and Moreland’s voice was amazing. I’m definitely going to check out more of his music.

That’s it for this episode. What are your thoughts? The Hub invites you to join in the conversation in the comment section!
