In The Press — Memorial Day Edition

When news stories fall through the cracks, we here at Colbert News Hub catch them for a post we call “In the Press”.

Here’s hoping everyone’s Memorial day was nice. Did you visit any grave sites or were you in the mood for BBQ? Did you get the nice long weekend or did you have to work? Tip of the hat to those of you who did.

In this edition, some of Stephen’s recent subjects chime in on his treatment of them. Jon Stewart is making an impression in China.

The Colbert Report

Jeff Duncan acknowledged the mention on his Facebook page:

“SC’s own, Stephen Colbert had some fun at my expense last night over my Census Reform bill. He played up the left wing’s conspiracy theory angle a bit much and down played the harassment aspect, but overall it was pretty funny.

Did Mazda Really Sponsor Colbert’s ‘Obama Scandal Booth’?

From The Wall St Journal, May 21

“Like my colleagues, [I will] grasp wildly at any accusation that floats past. “

Obviously, this journalist is not aware of that oh so lovely clause in Stephen’s contract about during-show-mentions of sponsors, a clause that will hopefully be removed in the next round of negotiations.

Mazda said it did indeed sponsor last night’s show, which explains the commercials for its 2014 Mazda6 sedan. But the company said it didn’t know how its name and the car would be integrated into the show.

“The Scandal Booth was entirely Colbert’s creation,” said Mazda spokesman Jeremy Barnes. The way it works is that “you agree to relinquish creative control” regarding how the sponsor is depicted on screen.

Thank the Cosmos, at least Stephen gets creative control.

Gwen Moore still smiling after Colbert Report appearance
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, May 16

U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.) turned down appearing on Comedy Central’s Colbert Report show several times before finally agreeing to be interviewed by comedian Stephen Colbert.

The results, which aired Wednesday night, were at times laugh-out-loud funny.

“I was very reluctant to go on the show, I was very apprehensive about him making me the butt of the joke,” Moore said Thursday. “But then I decided, ‘you know what Gwen, just go in and be yourself, relax and have fun.”

She went on to talk about some of the things they did that got cut from the on-air segment and the fake motorcycle ride she took with Stephen.

Joe Piscopo’s Reddit AMA includes gushing about Stephen

If you go toward the end of it, he has some nice things to say about our hero. Good, cuz I’d hate to hate Joe. It is an interesting read, and not just because of the gushing.

Need to say something here: Stephen Colbert is one of the smartest, most talented human beings on TV today. I am a HUGE Colbert fan!

Danica Patrick on Racing at Richmond, Being on The Colbert Report And More

A full interview with Ms. Patrick from “Auto Racing Daily”. We offer a snippet of the good stuff:

HOW MUCH WASTHE COLBERT REPORT EXPERIENCE? WHAT’S IT LIKE CARRYING HIS LIKENESS ON YOUR CAR THIS WEEKEND? “I have always liked The Colbert Report. I think it is a great show. It is really funny. I love his (Stephen Colbert) sense of humor. That was the first time I have been on his show. I was excited. He’s a cool guy. Obviously he plays a character. He said before I went out there.  So my character is incredibly ignorant and stupid. Just bear with me; have fun with it. It was cool. When we got done, he came back and said good job; that was fun; sorry I went a little bit long, but I was having a good time. So that’s a very nice thing for him to say. I had a good time.

The Daily Show

Jon Stewart — the new Voice of America in China?

So yeah. The young people of China are cool.

In the above headline link, the video talks about how The Daily Show has become very popular.

Is satirical news gaining traction?

You may think the Chinese will feel offended and hate this guy, but as far as I know, Jon Stewart and his show have been quite popular in China for some time. Although no licensed versions of the show are available, you can still watch it with Chinese subtitles every day, because people voluntarily translate, subtitle and post the shows online for viewers to watch and comment on within hours of their broadcast.

Besides The Daily Show, other American shows that talk about news sarcastically, including Jimmy Kimmel Live and The Colbert Report, are also popular here in China.

Marc Maron On Jon Stewart: ‘There’s Some Tension There’

I have heard of Marc, but didn’t know he was doing anything recent. Jon runs deep, eh?

Marc Maron has made no secret of his ongoing plea for Jon Stewart to come on his show, and on a recent appearance on HuffPost Live, the acclaimed “WTF” podcast host (and star of the upcoming “Maron” on IFC) confirmed that the “Daily Show” anchor has no plans to go on Maron’s show anytime soon, due to their rocky history.

“There’s some tension there that’s decades old,” Maron acknowledged to host Ricky Camilleri, referencing Maron and Stewart’s past as rival up-and-coming comedians in New York City.

The Donald Trump-Jon Stewart Feud Gets The Taiwanese Animation Treatment, And It’s Hilarious

From “Business Insider” Australia, May 7, 2013

If you blinked you missed the big feud. Interesting how that kinda came and went. I guess Jon’s the one guy who can shut Trump up.

Meet The Diplomat And Daily Show Fan Accused Of Being A CIA Spy In Russia

Talking Points Memo-May 14th

Huh? Uh-oh. What does Jon know and when did he know it?

Ryan Christopher Fogle, the “third secretary” at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow who was detained by Russia’s domestic intelligence agency and being accused of being a CIA spy Monday night, is a former frat boy and Daily Show fan from Missouri.

According to the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), the successor to the KGB, Fogle was found in possession of a letter attempting to recruit an officer from one of Russia’s special services to work with the CIA, two wigs, three pairs of sunglasses, cash, and a knife, among other things. After he was detained, Fogle was turned over to the U.S. Embassy and expelled from Russia Tuesday.
