One of New York’s top independent talent managers is joining the growing WME-IMG fold.
James Dixon, whose Dixon Talent represents Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel, among others, is selling his business to the sports and entertainment behemoth that has been on a buying spree of late. Dixon’s A-list clients are expected to remain with the firm.
Dixon, whose small management company has amassed an enviable roster of clients, including comic Adam Carolla, ESPN’s Bill Simmons and The Voice host Carson Daly, will remain a separate entity under the WME-IMG banner, rather than being integrated into the bigger fold. The acquisition will boost WME-IMG’s roster of top comics and TV broadcasters. The company already represents Chris Matthews and Charlie Rose, among others in that space.
“James has built his business on two core philosophies that are intrinsic to WME-IMG: a belief in great talent and applying an entrepreneurial approach to representation,” WME-IMG co-CEO Patrick Whitesell tells The Hollywood Reporter in a statement. Adds co-CEO Ari Emanuel: “We look forward to extending his business even further through the resources WME-IMG has to offer across each of its divisions.”

Stephen Colbert will take time in between gigs to be honored at the 10th annual Oscar Wilde Awards, which take place February 19th, 2015 at J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot production company in Santa Monica.
The nonprofit US-Ireland Alliance created the easygoing shindig to recognize the contributions of the Irish in film and television. Colbert, however, was born in Washington and raised in Charleston, S.C.
“My great-great-grandfather sailed from Limerick with but two goals: 1) get a job digging the Erie Canal and 2) party in L.A. I am proud to fulfill his dream,” Colbert told US-Ireland Alliance president Trina Vargo.

The fine folks at Second City have decided to help soothe us from Colbert withdrawal by releasing footage of Stephen’s last night at the theatre on May 22, 1994. Introduced by Steve Carell, who effusively praised Stephen’s work and said “I think he’s put up some of the best scenes done here…he’s an exceptional improvisor with an exceptional reference level.” (“And he has funny ears!” yelled Amy Sedaris, helpfully, from off-stage.) Stephen, joined by Paul Dinello on guitar, and other notable troupe members such as Mitch Rouse and David Razowksy were on hand to perform songs from various revues during Stephen’s tenure.
I really want to hear the whole “Fish Tank” song. They put a lot of feeling into that one. After the jump there is another great SC video for us to “look back” on.
Former Colbert Report intern Ben Goldman shares “entrepreneurial” lessons he learned from working on the show, posting about his experience on Reddit and also his new mobile app, Qork:
One of the most poignant memories I have of my time at TCR was the company culture. Ridiculous artwork of Stephen hung on all the walls, and props rested on all the shelves like historic artifacts. Staff and crew ate together in communal spaces and went out for drinks nearly every Thursday night. There was mutual respect among everyone, a feature that began at the top with Stephen himself who would know the name of every employee and intern that worked on the show. The result was that we were united in our obsession with the product being great.
At one point, a script supervisor told me very seriously “This is the greatest place in the world to work, it never gets better than this.” The intense love the team had for working at the show, where people were cool and the product was great, is one of the main reasons the show succeeded.

Stephen Colbert is a genius, without a doubt in my mind. But he didn’t let that get in the way of hiring people who were smarter, and perhaps even funnier, than he is. Some of his writers were truly prodigal in their ability to write jokes, and Colbert would encourage them relentlessly. During every “commercial break,” he’d have a stable of writers and showrunners go up to his desk to give him notes and Stephen would listen to everything they said before continuing the show.
One time during a taping when a pre-filmed segment was airing, I watched Stephen talk to one of the showrunners and ask about who wrote that bit. He was utterly impressed and a few months later, that writer was promoted to head writer.

In the penultimate week of ‘The Colbert Report’, you may recall Congresswomen Nancy Pelosi threw down some pretty neat moves on a BMX during the last installment of ‘Better Know a District’. Turns out it wasn’t actually Nancy Pelosi, but stuntman Alex Schuler. A rider from North Carolina, Alex recently joined the film industry as a stuntman, and has already had the opportunity to work on some big projects. In an interview with Vital BMX he speaks about his experiences working on ‘The Colbert Report’ and his upcoming projects.
