Jon Stewart | – Part 2

The complete, uncensored history of the award-winning The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, as told by its correspondents, writers, and host.

For almost seventeen years, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart brilliantly redefined the borders between television comedy, political satire, and opinionated news coverage. It launched the careers of some of today’s most significant comedians, highlighted the hypocrisies of the powerful, and garnered 23 Emmys. Now the show’s behind-the-scenes gags, controversies, and camaraderie will be chronicled by the players themselves, from legendary host Jon Stewart to the star cast members and writers-including Samantha Bee, Stephen Colbert, John Oliver, Steve Carell, Lewis Black, Jessica Williams, John Hodgman, and Larry Wilmore-plus some of The Daily Show’s most prominent guests and adversaries: John and Cindy McCain, Glenn Beck, Tucker Carlson, and many more.

This oral history takes the reader behind the curtain for all the show’s highlights, from its origins as Comedy Central’s underdog late-night program hosted by Craig Kilborn to Jon Stewart’s long reign to Trevor Noah’s succession, rising from a scrappy jester in the 24-hour political news cycle to become part of the beating heart of politics-a trusted source for not only comedy but also commentary, with a reputation for calling bullshit and an ability to effect real change in the world.

Through years of incisive election coverage, Jon Stewart’s emotional monologue in the wake of 9/11, his infamous confrontation on Crossfire, passionate debates with President Obama and Hillary Clinton, feuds with Bill O’Reilly and Fox, the Indecisions, Mess O’Potamia, and provocative takes on Wall Street and racism, The Daily Show has been a cultural touchstone. Now, for the first time, the people behind the show’s seminal moments come together to share their memories of the last-minute rewrites, improvisations, pranks, romances, blow-ups, and moments of Zen both on and off the set of one of America’s most groundbreaking shows.

Speaking at the Television Critics’ Association’s summer press tour on Saturday, network boss Casey Bloys revealed that Jon Stewart’s HBO project will be an animated parody of a cable news network.

As The Wrap reports, the project will be “an Onion-like portal that will consist of video and text, with the animation allowing for a quick turnaround. […] It allows him to comment real-time on what’s happening during the day’s news events. The animation allows him to respond to things very quickly.” […] There will also be an element on the HBO channel itself as well.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that, Stewart “is establishing an animation studio and wants to get material out on a daily basis. The idea is that it’s an animated parody of a cable news network in an Onion-like portal. It will be his voice, in his actual voice, and his tone.” […] There will also be a written component. And, down the line, a half-hour effort on the linear network.

While no premiere date has been set, it is hoped that the project will be ready in the fall, in time for the presidential election.

When news stories fall through the cracks, we here at Colbert News Hub find them for a post we call, In The Press.

Hey hubsters! We’re back again with the articles you might have missed in June. In this edition, A.V. Club published the second part of its oral history of Comedy Central with a nice portion on The Colbert Report. There are interesting interviews with some of the other late-night hosts and their staff, as well as discussion about a particularly ‘bad week’ The Late Show had last month. On the bright side, Meryl Streep is apparently a big fan, and Stephen’s interview with Bill O’Reilly got props from the media!

When news stories fall through the cracks, we here at Colbert News Hub find them for a post we call, In The Press.

Continuing with the articles you might have missed in the past couple of months, I must warn you that this May edition is a bit more critical than usual. When Chris Licht was hired as an executive producer it was taken as confirmation that things haven’t been running smoothly behind the scenes, and a bunch of articles were written trying to outline what exactly hasn’t been working with the show. On a brighter note, you’ll also find articles such as the one about Stephen’s image as a “cool Catholic,” about Stephen’s visit at the Spoleto Festival, and interviews with Larry Wilmore and Conan O’Brien.

Don’t hesitate to share your thoughts!

Michael L. Ferro, the collection manager at the Clemson University Arthropod Collection, recently published the article ‘Fourteen new species of Sonoma Casey (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Pselaphinae) with a key to species from western North America‘ in ‘Insecta Mundi’, a journal of world insect systematics.

The article describes fourteen new beetles species, all belonging to the Sonoma genus, that were discovered by Ferro after examining specimens from eighteen different institutions. The beetles are small predators, mainly found in leaf litter and rotten wood. With these new discoveries, the genus now has fifty-seven species, with forty from western North America and seventeen from the eastern United States.

Some of the new species were named after famous people, including Sonoma stewarti (named after Jon Stewart) and Sonoma colberti (named after Stephen Colbert) which has only been found in Shasta County, California.
