In what many hailed as an unexpected and unusual move, Swedish officials told the US comedian that he could not take over the @sweden Twitter account on Wednesday after Colbert’s much publicized #ArtificialSwedener campaign.
Maria Ziv, the director of marketing of Visit Sweden, one of the organization’s behind the initiative, explained to The Local on Thursday that Colbert’s Twitter style, along with her agency’s fear of selling out, were the two main reasons behind the decision.
“We started this initiative to create a sense of closeness and a dialogue between the curator and the followers, in the aim of giving a perspective of Sweden and its culture,” she said, referencing the Curators of Sweden campaign.
“When we looked at Stephen Colbert’s official Twitter account, we saw that while he did have 3.6 million followers – he followed no one in return.”
She went on to explain that Visit Sweden ultimately had serious reservations about whether Colbert would be a good fit and what sort of signals a “yes” would have sent.
“He is a Twitter ‘broadcaster’ and this doesn’t align with our goals. Our decision was that we wouldn’t cave in and sell out, just because he’s famous. We decided that a Colbert takeover would have served him, not us,” she said.

“Although we appreciate that having Colbert as a Curator of Sweden would be meaningful in terms of global attention to this initiative, VisitSweden and the Swedish Institute have decided to – after thorough consideration – decline his generous offer,” the agencies said in a statement released to The Local.
“The account is – at the current time – first and foremost a way for us to hand over the voice of Sweden to the Swedes.”
Frida Roberts, Head of the Communications Unit at the Swedish Institute, called Colbert’s proposal “tempting” but argued that the Curators of Sweden initiative, which allows a different Swede control the @sweden Twitter account each week, is primarily for “Swedish citizens”.
”It’s been very exciting to realize that Stephen Colbert has such a strong interest in Sweden and our culture,” said Maria Ziv, Director of Marketing at VisitSweden.
She added that she would be “delighted” to invite Colbert over to Sweden so that he can “experience the openness and diversity of the Swedish society on the spot”.

As you most certainly have heard, writer, director, producer, and blogger Nora Ephron passed away June 26th due to complications from leukemia at the age of 71. Ms. Ephron directed Stephen in Bewitched, a film that she also wrote, and one that Stephen played a supporting role. Known for her incisive wit, which parlayed its way in her well-known romantic comedies (most notably When Harry Met Sally), I am sure that she and Stephen managed to have a great working relationship.
Watch the two discuss Stephen’s sizable amount of cut scenes from Bewitched and the book she was promoting at the time, I Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Thoughts on Being a Woman, in her only TCR appearance. I like when she tells Stephen that he easily had the talent to be a big Hollywood star. I definitely agree.

The U.S. Olympic Committee has already apologized twice for telling knitting social network Ravelry that its knitting-themed competition was “disrespectful” to Olympic athletes.
But community members are still holding a grudge. And now they want to get Stephen Colbert involved.
Socks for Stephen is a new Ravelry group dedicated to “bribing” Colbert with a lifetime supply of handknit socks in exchange for covering the controversy on The Colbert Report.
