This episode was of the pee-your-pants laughing variety, one where if, like me, you have to watch quietly, you end up sounding like you are having spasms or something. We had a hilarious take on the Pepsi-hating Mexican cartel the Knights Templar. Also, a Tip/Wag featuring a recent gay bar’s ban on bachelorettes. The topper was a rousing anthem of “Amercia” in tribute to Mitt Romney’s (or shall we say Ronmey’s) election App (and his campaign’s inability to run a spellcheck.)

TDS writer Kevin Bleyer has written a new book, “Me the People: One Man’s Selfless Quest to Rewrite the Constitution of the United States of America”, ‘the most significant literary event of the twenty-first, twentieth, nineteenth, and latter part of the eighteenth centuries’.

The United States Constitution promised a More Perfect Union. It’s a shame no one bothered to write a more perfect Constitution—one that didn’t trigger more than two centuries of arguments about what the darn thing actually says. Until now. Perfection is at hand. A new, improved Constitution is here. And you are holding it.

We think of our Constitution as the painstakingly designed blueprint drawn up by, in Thomas Jefferson’s words, an “assembly of demigods” who laid the foundation for the sturdiest republic ever created. The truth is, it was no blueprint at all but an Etch A Sketch, a haphazard series of blunders, shaken clean and redrawn countless times during a summer of petty debates, drunken ramblings, and desperate compromise—as much the product of an “assembly of demigods” as a confederacy of dunces.

No wonder George Washington wished it “had been made more perfect.” No wonder Benjamin Franklin stomached it only “with all its faults.” The Constitution they wrote is a hot mess. For starters, it doesn’t mention slavery, or democracy, or even Facebook; it plays favorites among the states; it has typos, smudges, and misspellings; and its Preamble, its most famous passage, was written by a man with a peg leg. Which, if you think about it, gives our Constitution hardly a leg to stand on.

“I would rather read a constitution written by Kevin Bleyer than by the sharpest minds in the country.” — Jon Stewart

“The Constitution has served us well for centuries. Thanks to Kevin Bleyer, those days are over.” — Stephen Colbert

Andy Simmons from Reader’s Digest has a wonderful review of the book:

In his book, Me the People (Random House), Bleyer takes a red pencil to democracy’s most hallowed laundry list, which, he insists, is simply a product of too much compromise.

Nitpicking his way through all the articles and amendments, Bleyer explains, in uproarious and fascinating fashion, why no less a whiner than George Washington himself was compelled to wish that the Constitution “had been made more perfect.” He then offers up his fixes. You think congress is overrun by special interests? Here’s the solution: We’re all members of congress and we all become our own special interests.

Thomas Jefferson wanted the Constitution rewritten every 19 years, says Bleyer, by way of explaining why he has undertaken this job. “So by Jefferson’s math, the Constitution of the United States should have been rewritten 11 times already… and let’s face it, The Constitution, as a literary property, is hot, hot, hot.”

What a great back-to-shows show! Tonight Stephen celebrated the two prestigious awards he received over the break – the Peabody (been there, done that, but one more time, please!) and, the even more impressive Maxim’s Hot 100 for 2012 . According to Stephen, he has now been independently verified as hotter than you, me, and the other 3.3 billion women not included on the list. Talk about a shame spiral! *Goes off to eat a pint of ice cream.*

I kind of hearted the total fail of the Cato the Elder joke, but Stephen rebounded straight away with a quick burst of latin. What broadcaster out there busts out the latin these days on a semi-regular basis? Must be why we love him so much. Hubster jennie kindly translates for us in the comments below. Also digging the Donald Trump as tangerine in a toupee graphic.

Hello, Hubsters!

Happy Memorial Day to all those who celebrate. I hope you’ve had a fun and relaxing long weekend. I myself have had much time off, first with my sister visiting NYC (we saw David Hallberg in a stunning performance of “Giselle”) and then with me returning the favor and visiting her in Colorado, where I am right now. Ah, vacation time is good, and I certainly hope both Stephen and Jon have enjoyed their well-earned break. But, fortunately for us, their time off is nearly over, and I’m sure we’re all waiting impatiently to have them back and mocking. All in all, it’s been quieter than usual while they’ve been away, so there isn’t one big, you-know-they’ll-cover it story waiting. But with the election coming ever closer, Europe flailing, the continuing political unrest in the Middle East, and events swirling around the Catholic Church, I’m sure they’ll find plenty of material to play with.

It certainly looks like a very exciting (though holiday-shortened) week with great guests for both our boys. So let’s go…. Read more

Seven Seconds With Stephen Colbert at the Peabody Awards

HuffPost TV: Have you named him? I know this is your second [Peabody Award].
Stephen Colbert: Ah, I think I’m going to call him deuce. It’s my second. This is deucey.

“The Colbert Report” won for its Super PAC segments, and Stephen Colbert thanked Comedy Central “for all the freedom they gave us to do this thing that was possibly illegal, and especially Viacom for strongly resisting us doing this thing that was possibly illegal.” He went on to add, “This is our accidental Peabody… I was just trying to mock a Tim Pawlenty ad and we didn’t know how to finish our ad and I said, ” ‘Well, what’s at the end of his ad?’ and they said, ‘Libertypac.com’ and I said, ‘So just put Colbert PAC on the end of our ad.’ “
