Stephen Colbert was featured on last nights 40 Anniversary Special of ‘Saturday Night Live‘ on NBC. During a montage of famous faces who auditioned for the show, a blink and you miss it clip from Stephen’s audition was included at the 03:23 – 03:26 mark.
Though unsuccessful in his audition, something that Lorne Michaels still kicks himself about today, Stephen would go onto provide the voice for Ace in the ‘Ambiguously Gay Duo’, which was a apart of the recurring skit “Saturday TV Funhouse”.
Back in 2011, Stephen spoke to GQ about auditioning for SNL as part of the in depth article, ‘An Oral History of the Rise and Fall (and Rise) of “The Dana Carvey Show”.’
‘The Hollywood Reporter‘ is releasing a special ‘Saturday Night Live’ themed magazine edition ahead of the shows 40th Anniversary Special which is set to air on February 15th, 2015. The magazine features a reflective interview with the show’s creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels, in which he talks about some of the major performers who auditioned for the show but were turned down.
Even the best guts in the business can miss. Whom did you overlook that you kicked yourself over later?
Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell auditioned. There were lots of people who you’d see how brilliant they were, but you knew on some level that it wasn’t going to work. Lisa Kudrow gave a brilliant audition, but it was at the time when it was Jan Hooks and Nora [Dunn]. I wasn’t at the Jim Carrey audition, but somebody who was there said, “I don’t think Lorne would like it,” and they were probably wrong, but it doesn’t matter. Or maybe they were right — who knows? No one gets it all right.

What do you think Hubsters. Would you have liked to have seen Stephen Colbert as a ‘Saturday Night Live’ cast member? Do you think he would make a good guest host? Or are you struggling to comprehend what life would be like if ‘The Colbert Report’ did not exist?
When news stories fall through the cracks, we here at Colbert News Hub find them for a post we call, In The Press.
October’s “In the Press” features Northwestern University’s pride for their late night alumni, media figures showing their love to Stephen, and hearty mentions of, as Stephen put it recently, “Jon Daily and The Zoo Crew” (aka Jon Stewart and The Daily Show.)
Be sure to stay tuned to our upcoming ITP posts as the show nears its conclusion, and the media weighs in. If a story grabs your attention, let us know your thoughts in the comments!

With Stephen Colbert about to take David Letterman’s throne and abandon his Bill O’Reilly-like persona, it’s time for a little reminder that he can do other characters as well. Prior to making a solo name for himself, he and his fellow Steve (i.e. Carell) were Saturday Night Live’s Ambiguously Gay Duo of Ace and Gary, who confounded foes with suggestive poses while never actually confirming their personal life details.
This summer, they can insert themselves right into your heart and cram onto your computer with this bobblehead-style toy that attaches to your monitor (and probably other things). We’re delighted to be debuting the first pictures of it right here on TR. Best of all, you don’t even have to go to Comic-Con for this item to penetrate your warm household – additional supplies will be available for $11.99 at Entertainment Earth.
